After a tram ride up the mountain, during which we saw the Coachella Valley and the edge of the Salton Sea, we arrived at the peak. The snow was glistening, and some people brought hiking equipement. My friend and I had hot chocolate and cinnamon rolls and just took in the blue sky and beautiful environs.

The tram ride was fascinating, and we hiked the Desert View Trail to various overlooks. The view from the top was stupendous. The temperature was 85 in the valley, and 51 up on the mountain, so be prepared for cooler temps!

We did the trail starting from the tram. We took the tram at 8am. Started the trail at around 8:12am. The moving time for the trail is a little bit more than 5 hours. It is more than 17km in total. The ranger said it should take about 6 hours on average. The trail is not hard and the whether was cloudy in the morning, so our way up was not hot (but the way down was hot though). Very rocky in the last 1-2 miles. Very windy and cold at the top (I hope I had a warm coat but I didn’t bring it). We saw two dears and several mushrooms. The first 1/4 of the trail was in a forest landscape which is very beautiful. I bet it would be even more beautiful in the spring when there is water. Next time I will try another trail in this mountain.

It was a gorgeous day up on the mountain. Temperatures were mild, winds were refreshing, the trail was light with people and once again...the summit was worth all of the work.

Take the gondola up and enjoy the day - it's wonderful up there. Lots of trails and views of the valley. It's like a whole different biosphere.

We took the rotating tram to the top of San Jacinto. There are amazing views both on the ride up and at the top of the mountain. And the big bonus is how much cooler it is at the top of the mountain! In addition to views, we did a small 1.5 mile hike enjoying the sound of the wind blowing through the Pines and birds chirping. It’s completely different world than being on the valley floor. We’ll come back again.

The tram is worth every penny. The lodge at the top has a lovely bar area with very friendly people. The trails were amazing, as were the views. Perfect place to visit on a hot day as it is about 30 degrees cooler than down in Palm Springs. Highly recommend it!

The drive from Palm Springs through the San Jacinto Mountains is stunning. One moment you are in the desert with the backdrop all brown and then ext you are among trees - and lots of them. Linger, bring a picnic, and drive carefully. There are a lot of twists and turns on these roads!

Beautiful, relaxing afternoon going from sunshiny 75 degrees in Palm Springs to snow on the ground cold when departing the aerial tram at the top. My husband and I are long past comfortably hiking but we definitely enjoyed a leisurely stroll. Paths are paved and being up here just for the views is absolutely worth the trip up the mountain. And if you get thirsty or hungry, refreshments, with a view, are available.

I gave it 4 stars because we weren't able to hike up all the way to the summit due to the shortened operating hours of the tram. In the summer, the tram starts running at 8 am but when we went in December, it didn't start until 10 am. With sunset around 4:30, we really couldn't make the hike up to the summit without having to walk back in the dark. Luckily, we were able to do the hike to Wellman's Divide and just made it back right before sunset.
