Taking in a little local history.

We started at the Rose garden. We stopped to smell the roses and boy were they fragrant. Then we head inside and opted for the exhibit while there was a book reading taking place. There were so many amazing stories and some cool artifacts as well. Can’t wait until the Black and White exhibit comes. Very good breakaway a must see and know if you are local.

Great Way to Learn about Ontario and the Inland Empire

RECOMMENDED FOR:
~Local Ontario Residents
~History buffs
~IE visitors
~Those looking for free things to do in Ontario

I love this museum. Not only does it have a fantastic museum full of Ontario and Inland Empire history, including Route 66 memorabilia. You'll also find regularly rotating special exhibits. I've seen a few of them and so far I've enjoyed each of these exhibits. Some that stand out are the clown/circus exhibit and the industrial art exhibit of Millard and Tony Sheets.

The museum is located on the grounds of the original city hall and the first park in the city of Ontario, Nugent's Park. The grounds have been completely redone to be water saving, but the lovely rose gardens are still intact and worth visiting for you rose lovers. The grounds remodel look awesome and have really updated the exterior of the property.

The museum is only open Thursday through Sunday, 12-4, but if you can find some time to visit, you'll find it worth the stop and there is no cost to visit!

fantastic building

This is a beautiful facility and there were several displays when I went. It is not large, so you probably only need to budget 30 min to an hour to go through (longer if you like to linger with your art experience). The gift shop is nicely done.

A really nice place

I like the building itself: classic WPA architecture in the former city hall. One current exhibit when I visited was about local commercial artists. Far more interesting than I would have thought. The other exhibit was about early highways and the roadside attraction culture. Very well done. The local history about Ontario was fascinating. All this and free admission!

Under the Big Top
Mar 2016 • Friends
My visit to the Ontario Museum of History and Art not only filled me with local knowledge of years past in their beautiful "Gem of the Foothills" exhibit but I was pleasantly surprised by their travelling exhibit "Under the Big Top" about Circus life from 1965 - 1995

Nice Museum

Great way to learn the history of the area through old photos. A small section on old Route 66 was enjoyable, as I rode that road a couple of times aboard my motorcycle.

Missed out on the art section as that portion of the museum is being remodeled.

Loved seeing the history of the area, the farms, the wineries, the intentional layout of the infrastructure of the city of Ontario.

Local Must-See

I host foreign students every summer, and design their program. I'm just sorry I hadn't taken groups to this museum sooner, and I definitely will schedule it for every group in the future. The museum itself does a great job of telling the story of local history. I haven't found anything else close within the IE. The combination of exhibits, way they are curated, voice narration, and other ways one can 'experience' local history are very well done.
The staff were wonderful, helpful, friendly folks who did everything they could to accommodate our large group. We combined this field trip by walking over the Ontario Library to get a little more peek into the area's past, but another option would be to go over to the ice skating rink nearby and enjoy some time there as well.

It's a small town museum in downtown Ontario. It's free and they feature California's history, very educational and interesting for students like my daughter in middle school. I recommend to visit this place!
