Castle Lake is pristine glacial cirque lake with granite cliffs and clear water, we canoed in the water, with the backdrop of the beautiful mountain, and splendid nature, picture perfect. You can rent a canoe from the local sports shop, they can help you tie...More

My Airbnb host recommended stopping at Castle lake, due to its beauty, on my trip down to the Shasta area from Redmond, OR. The lake is a 10 mile drive off the freeway and was well worth the extra miles. The lake was busy, as...More

This lake is so amazing. I love the mountains and the trails surrounding the lake too. I didn't make it up to the little castle lake, but next time. Great place to stop before heading up to the Mountian.

Great hiking, photo and XC skiing area! Been here many times and never tire of it. Castle Lake and Heart Lake are Northern California back country gems! The trail up to Heart Lake above Castle Lake is a little steep and somewhat under developed, but...More

The City of Mount Shasta is no doubt one of the West's last pristine small mountain towns. Castle Lake is beautiful, and there are several others, too.

We were pleasantly surprised at the quiet and beauty of Castle Lake. The lake sits in a scenic bowl with towering rock walls on 3 sides. The road in to the parking area is good and affords wonderful views of Black Butte, Mount Shasta and...More

It's relatively easy to get to Castle Lake, but it feels like you are miles from civilization. Castle Lake is a beautiful alpine lake with crystal-clear waters. You can swim in it in the summer and kayak from Spring through late fall. We also enjoy...More

The hike to Heart Lake from Castle Lake was definitely the highlight of our trip to Mount Shasta, despite the fact that we couldn't "quite see" it from there, due to wildfire smoke. The hike itself is less than an hour to get there, but...More

Popular hike. Easy to drive to. Wear hiking boots to go up to Heart Lake. Rocky and slippery sandy. Trail very obscure near tree line. Being our first time, we got lost coming and going. Allow extra time and daylight for safety. Phenomenal views up...More

We had an unexpected stop over in Mount Shasta because of mechanical issues on our RV trailer, so we took the opportunity to explore the area. This lake is absolutely stunning! It's an alpine lake so the water stays crystal clear, but it's warm enough...More

We drove up there the other day and the road was open and beautiful. We didn't see any dogs, and we saw no signs prohibiting them.
