I would not recommend Montara state beach for “a typical day on the beach with the kids”. It is a beautiful place to walk your dog if you live locally, or go surfing, but it is dangerous for swimming (rip currents) and there is no lifeguard. Nature here is not tampered with and there are not many people there, so it is really nice to take a stroll if you are staying in a Montara hotel.

This is all around one of the best beaches near the San Francisco Bay Area. It's a geological wonderland. There's tons of sand. Parking and pedestrian access are relatively easy.

If you're into California geology, this is a must-see beach. Open the geological map app and find the contact point between the Pleistocene marine terrace and the Miocene granite of the Montara Block.

If you're just into a nice day at the beach, this is the beach for you. There are several divots in the cliff side for a nice bbq or picnic.

This Beach is one of the prettiest you do have a nice stairway down to it and its clean with beautiful cliffs around you. The waves can be large at times and there is a good restaurant at the cliff to eat dinner with a beautiful view of the ocean. The sand is clean. I was there and there were surfers enjoying the day

An excellent getaway from the busy city life. A refreshing break just a few hours drive from the hustle and bustle of the SF and East Bay Area. Nice clean beach.

I drove down the Pacific Coast Highway and stopped by at Montara State Beach. If you are in the area I strongly recommend to stop by at one of the many beaches that line the Pacific Coast Highway. This was my first time seeing the Pacific Ocean and you can just feel the ocean consume you. I suggest to wear comfortable clothes along with comfortable shoes due to the terrain being unstable. Make sure your phone or camera are charged to take plenty of photos!!

Nice beach with plenty of clean, white sand. Some interesting geology too. Parking is limited at the official beach lot, but don't hesitate to park just to the north on HWY 1. Water often way too rough for swimming.
