We asked at the tourist office office about visiting the Cold War Tunnel and one of the women working there took us on the tour. Yes, the tunnels are empty but they are very atmospheric and I felt that it really helped put the isolationist...More

This place seems like a great idea, but it is a cold tunnel with nothing inside. The guide rushed us through in what felt like 5 minutes. She just told us what was written on the doors. If you want to escape the heat, go...More

The Cold War tunnel is a fascinating slice of Albania's paranoid Cold War history. It also happens to very cold inside, and a perfect escape from the hot sun. A volunteer guide will walk you through and give you a brief history lesson, but she...More

200 LEK entrance fee with guide provided. Spent maybe 20 min inside, not that much to to see, but anyhow I enjoyed the visit. Cool temperature inside which made it a great place to escape the Albanian summer for a while.

Not much descriptions or explanations! Good path to take if you wish to walk around the castle. Would be good to explain the purpose of the tunnel and its role during g the Cold War.

It was apparently dug out in the mid 70s and local people are still loathe to talk about it. The guides are very knowledgable, and are students working voluntarily, so they should be well tipped. it is symbolic of the period when Albania was a...More

Visiting the Cold War Tunnel is an absolute must if in Gjirokaster (assuming you're not claustrophobic). The size of the tunnel complex, which contains dozens of rooms, is staggering considering the size of the community - today the city has a population of 25,000 and...More
