The Moremi Game Reserve is a nearly 5.00km2 natural park in the eastern area of the Okavango Delta. It is the oldest national park in Botswana and is considered one of the most beautiful and best nature reserves in Africa, as there are large amounts of animals. We found the rides good to very good and also saw quite a lot of animals. However, overall we liked the Khwai Community Concession even better, because there was more water there due to the Okavango and also more animals were to be seen.
Admission costs 270 BWP per person plus 75 BWP per car and you pay either at the North entrance or at the South Gate.

We were actually at Moremi in May, at the end of their dry season before the rains come. We thought it might be easier to see the animals when there were fewer places for water, but our guide told us that regardless of the time of year, there is plenty of animals to see...and boy, was he right! We were there for three days, so we had a total of 6 drives and on each drive we had an amazing experience. From early morning lion kills of a zebra to the late afternoon elephant family playing with their kids in the mud, the viewing was some of the best we've ever had. Definitely will be going back!!

It is one of the most popular destinations in the Okavango Delta and is the only (officially) protected area in the Delta, established in 1963, named after the Batawana chief Moremi III, and occupies approximately 5000 square kilometres. So with very abundant fauna. It has well-groomed and well-maintained trails, covers a third of the Okavango Delta and has dry terrain that crops out between marshy terrain. Within the area there are islands, including Chief's Island which can be reached by mokoro, a boat originally carved from an ebony trunk (now in fiberglass but wood-coloured, which doesn't clash...)
They have recently reintroduced rhinos (which were almost extinct here) and now Moremi is home to all the big five: lions, leopards, buffalo, elephants and rhinos. Difficult to see but there are also wild dogs, which are also protected because they are in danger of extinction.

Compared to 10 years ago, a lot has changed. The access road from Maun, once a bad gravel road, has now become an almost impassable dirt track. It took you 1.5 hours over the 84 km, now 3.5 hours. The paperwork at the South Gate has been simplified a bit. The beautiful forest near the South Gate has been completely destroyed in a matter of months by a large group of elephants, now barren, barren and without game. The prolonged drought has meant that you have to go far into the park, to an arm of the river where there is still some water. There you will find hippos, elephants and other game. There are no larger herds of zebras left. We did see a number of groups of giraffes. Too bad, but this park seems doomed.

Those who go in search of the "real" Africa will find their ideal environment here.
Compared to Kenyan, Tanzanian parks, etc., the fundamental difference is: here men are the guests, animals are the masters and we must adapt to their habits.
We faced this adventure by staying for a week in tented camps (a somewhat harsh but absolutely fascinating experience), going every day in search of animals.
“Open” (but absolutely safe) tented camps, which during the night were visited by elephants, hippos and felines in general, making the stay even more authentic.
Sometimes finding them immediately, others after a long search.
In this way we saw extraordinary landscapes in their ordinariness, waiting for the great rains that will completely change the landscapes themselves, but in the end literally finding ourselves face to face with all the possible inhabitants of the area (the rare leopards, lions, elephants, hippos, zebras, giraffes, and an infinite number of birds).
Moremi is the classic case which, at the end of the stay, causes the much famous "Africa sickness".
Absolutely worth visiting.

Absolutely wonderful. Animals, animals and more animals. Did a mobile camping safari with a local guide from Botswana who looked after us really well. The photos say everything, can't wait to go again. AND added bonus that Botswana is one of the safest African countries.

Unfortunately we on spent one night at Khwai Camp on our way from Savuti to Maun. Khwai campsite has large treed sites and the ablution facilities are in excellent condition. A representaive from SKL, who manage the campsite came and spoke to us and informed us of the game drives within the area and what we were likely to see. A small herd of Elephant passed close to the camp and we were visited by a Spotted Hyena during the evening.

It sometimes takes a lot of time patience to see the big five but we managed to even though our view of the rhino were just the head and horns running away from us through the bush.

You see all animals possible, except cheetah, rhino or oryx. But wow, really amazing. I would repeat if I had the opportunity.

We have been going to the Okavango and Moremi GR for 20 years now and find it among the more beautiful and pristine places in Africa. The Botswana govt has done a good job of limiting access so that it does not seem overcrowded.
