- LMBNew York City, New York25 contributionsNice Morning ActivityVery nicely laid out with meandering trails. It's impeccably maintained. Overall about a 2 mile easy walk with lots of interesting things to see. Stopped in the art gallery to see a short film about Fernando Botero which was a nice respite from the sun but also educational. Staff is very helpful and cute gift shop. Recommend going early morning before the weather gets too hot.Visited October 2023Written October 21, 2023
- GoAlong2Seattle, Washington891 contributionsAmazing array of plantsThis garden has an amazing display of desert plants in a curated and cultivated garden. A main loop path leads you to several smaller loops that explore various zones of plants. The trail can get very hot on sunny days, but there are trees and water stations to help provide some shade and cool down. The visitor center, gift shop, and restaurant also provide relief if you are overheating. We stopped at the butterfly house on one of the loops as well. It is easy to spend two or more hours exploring the gardens.Visited October 2023Traveled on businessWritten October 24, 2023
- denveristaDenver, Colorado154 contributionsAccessible and worth the tripWell worth the trip. Frankly, much more interesting and tolerable than trying to hike in the desert! Accessible. Paths are smooth and graded; I woulld feel comfortable bringing my 88 year-old mother here, and I saw a couple of people on scooters. Plus, you can see and do as much as you want (we walked every loop we could). Stops for cold water, seating, and shade are located along the paths. Signage is in English and Spanish. Make a day of it and have lunch at Gertrudes (the restaurant) and sit outside to enjoy the plants.Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 8, 2023
- PJS890Milwaukee, Wisconsin99 contributionsAmazing gardensMost beautiful gardens, so enjoyable! The volunteers along the way were very knowledgeable about the gardens and overall desert information. Spent a few hours here and also had lunch at their on site restaurant, Gertrude’s. Highly recommend them for a lunch and their dessert menu should not be missed!Visited November 2023Traveled with friendsWritten November 11, 2023
- Karyn WKansas City, Missouri1,645 contributionspretty space full of plants that grow in the desertWhen my husband, son and I went they had limited hours, due to the heat, but we still enjoyed visiting a lot and saw everything we wanted to. Things appear to be growing very naturally but there were multiple sections to see different types of desert plants. Of course there were lots of cacti but also grasses plus a pollinator sections for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. There was a herb garden and an edible garden too. While we were there a wedding was happening so they definitely offer that as well. I liked how each section had a distance so you could decide if you wanted to walk it or not. None was over half a mile though. I did wish there was more shade though, so be sure to wear a hat/sunscreen. The gardens do offer reciprocal membership otherwise admission was $25 for adults, $15 for kids 3-17 years old, and free for ages 2 and under. The store offered a nice selection of items to buy as well.Visited August 2023Traveled with familyWritten November 13, 2023
- luv4phoodMarietta, Georgia920 contributionsLovely gardenBeat the heat and go early in the morning. We visited in early April and the temperatures still reached 100. There are a good number of shade structures throughout the gardens to provide some relief. This is a really beautiful garden with lots of variety of cactus. Insider tip: If you are not already a garden member, join! The garden membership provides reciprocal benefits to other gardens around the country. On our membership, we visited several other gardens for free due to the reciprocal benefits.Visited April 2023Traveled with familyWritten November 16, 2023
- AndMHGilroy, California267 contributionsNot to be missedSpent a couple of hours here including a toddler. She really seemed to enjoy it. It’s beautifully maintained and quite impressive. Many Docents and staff all were very informative and helpful. One big surprise was the quality of the restaurant which had unique farm to table items that weee delicious and a wonderful setting especially on the heated patioVisited November 2023Traveled with familyWritten November 30, 2023
- azplaya96 contributionsLovely nature spotThis is a great place to enjoy the beauty of the Sonoran desert without having to leave the city. You can spend as little time or as much time as you want here. If you go in the summer, make sure to have water and sun protection.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 5, 2023
- 10OrchardWorcester, United Kingdom584 contributionsExcellent insight into the plants of the desertI so wished we had booked ahead for the illuminated tour! Nevertheless, the garden was better than I remembered it from our visit 6 years ago. Lots to see and great information boards, as well as guides, to explain the "ethnobotany". It is expensive at $25 per ticket but worth it for more than 2 hours of insight into the plants and peoples of the desertVisited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 18, 2023
- Gina PChicago, Illinois201 contributionsArt and CactusThe garden was beautiful and informative and a great way to enjoy the AZ weather. Bonus they currently have a Botero art exhibit that was outstanding! I spent about 4 leisurely hours wandering, learning, and enjoying the views.Visited January 2024Traveled soloWritten January 2, 2024

We paid $24.95 to get in thinking it was going to a beautiful experience after reading the reviews. We’ve been to many botanical gardens but this one was a let down. It’s the same plants a million times over. Nothing was bloomed so it literally was a million cacti. The best part about it was the light up sculptures. They even closed off one of the biggest loops, 2 hours before they closed, so after paying full price we didn’t even get to see the whole garden. They are open till like 10 pm however have the worst lighting in the world so u can’t even see anything. I wouldn’t return, and sad I wasted $50 here.

We appreciate your feedback! We are sorry to hear you had a less-than 5-star experience at the Garden. As a nonprofit, the Garden uses funds from admission and membership to add new visitor amenities, horticulture displays and exhibits. The new price structure includes access to the seasonal Butterfly Exhibit and behind-the-scenes tours of the new Hazel Hare Center for Plant Science. In addition, the Garden uses funds from admissions to further our work in desert conservation both locally and around the world. Speaking of, the Garden has one of the most complete collections of cactus and agave in the world, and we display them in our collection and on the trails. We will certainly share your thoughts with our staff to explore ways to improve visitor experiences, but if you would like to share any other feedback, please don't hesitate to reach out to acannon@dbg.org. We would also love if you gave us another chance. If you reach out to that email, he will share a promo code with a discount for you to come back at another time.

Beautiful displays of the vegetation you can find in the desert and so much variety! We came in the evening around 5:00 and stayed till closing at 8pm. My daughter and I LOVE plants and botanical gardens, and this exceeded expectations. Everything we saw was outdoors and the displays of all the cacti and succulents were stunning. We were so fortunate to see so many things flowering too! They started closing off parts around 7ish, so I would recommend making sure to hit the outside areas as soon as you can if coming in later in the day. They required masks due to COVID, which I appreciated, although I do have to say it did get hot wearing a mask all the time outside (it was about 95 out when we visited).

We enjoyed the Beatles tribute band, Marmalade Skies in the garden, after watching the brilliant sunset. Most shows sell out, so get your tickets in advance and plan to arrive early enough to snag a table. Beverages are available for purchase, along with various snacks. This is a great outdoor venue and quite comfortable in late February.

Out of all the botanical gardens I have been to this is definitely the most beautiful one! I went during the middle of March for spring break and there were so many gorgeous blooms. It was very hot and sunny so pack some sunglasses and a hat. Lots of walking to do but you can probably get through it in about two to three hours if you are pressed for time and can still see the whole thing. While I was there they had a traveling art exhibit of different colored animals statues throughout the garden that were awesome photo ops. All of the photos I took here came out stunning. They also had a butterfly garden that was included with your admission that was full of beautiful butterflies. The gift shop was kind of pricy but had really cute and unique things to buy. Overall, I definitely recommend visiting if you are in the area because it is honestly so picturesque and will be your favorite photos from your entire vacation!

I would rate the garden average because of the price and because I felt there were missed opportunities to educate the public on the plants and health of the environment. $29 per person was a little steep for the experience (hiking camelback mountain is free). We didn’t do a tour so perhaps we didn’t experience the gardens correctly.
I did enjoy the Sonoran Desert trail. There were more signs on this trail that taught me about the different plants and animals.
I would recommend this for children in strollers or individuals interested in learning about desert plants.

The botantical has a great mix of cacti and bushes. I would have liked to see more flowers that survive in the garden here in Phoenix. We went on second Tuesday of the month which is a day you can get in for free otherwise it's $25 per person (which I wouldn't pay). It's not worth $25 IMO. The day that it is free they accept donations. I brought sister and brother-in-law while they were here visiting.

Other than 2 trips to the Grand Canyon, this was my first trip :"inside" Arizona. I was visiting a freind in Mesa who winters here. I was staying for 8 days and he planned our day trips to maximize the most of what the area had to offer without overdoing it each day.
On 2-28-20 we drove to Tempe to visit the Desert Botanical Garden. The garden featured all sorts of cacti, Yucca and succulent galleries as well as grasses a butterfly pavillion and a desert wildflower trail. All the trails were open and you could go at your own pace. In addition to all the vegetation , There was an exhibit of Chihuly glass along side a display called Wild Rising by Cracking Art; life sized resin animals all painted in bright colors such as lime green penguins, yellow. frogs, blue and fuscia meertkats and bright blue alligators among others. A large pure white elephant was stationed in the Ottosen gallery on site as well. I understood from a docent that the animals were on loan from an Italian company and when their display time was finished they would deflate the animals, pack them up and move to the next location.
You could easily spend an entire day walking over all the trails and viewing the mountains just on the outside of the park. Entrance fee was under $20.00 for seniors

A very peaceful and relaxing way to spend a few hours walking among some amazing cacti and local flora. The butterfly pavilion was a particular favourite and almost worth the price of admission on its own! Allow about 3 hours to walk around the entire site and make sure you wear a hat and have a supply of water as it can get very hot. There are plenty of water stations and washrooms dotted about the gardens.

The Desert Botanical Gardens is a great destination to meet up with friends and enjoy a day together. Easily accessible with plenty of free parking, the Garden offers many paths so even on a crowded day, you don't feel crushed by others. Many paths offer shade and places to sit down. Plants are labeled for guiding oneself through the Garden with other educational information posted. Currently an art installation of boldly colored animal creatures are scattered throughout the Garden. Chihuly scuptures are at the entrance. The fee for seniors was around $25 as non members. Get a reservation when you enter if you want to eat at Gertrudes the onsite restaurant. It is a nice place to enjoy lunch while at the Garden. The Garden has an extensive gift shop and plant shop. Overall, a really nice place to visit while in the area.

Absolutely fantastic gardens especially if you are a succulent lover. Currently there is a special exhibit, Chiluly, which is worth seeing. We bought admission tickets for 4:45pm and dinner reservations at the gardens for 5:30pm. We were able to explore some of the gardens during daylight, eat dinner and then return to the gardens at dusk and sunset. The lighting was magical and the exhibit also had night lighting.

Good morning, my question is: What cacti/succulent can I plan in a 12" wide space that abuts a garage and gets full sun from 12 noon to around 8:00 pm. I do have a drip system there.
Written August 11, 2024
Not sure this is the best place to ask this question. The cacti are on display at the desert botanical garden, in lovely environments. They aren’t for sale.

They didn't stop me for taking a backpack into the gardens. I went in November.
