- Benjamin JForest Side38 contributionsHoly Crap, go there! But there could be small improvements.Table Mountain... trendy for Cape Town. Love the view of the city, the Atlantic. Great cafe and gift shop. But, it's a bit long, and cable cars need more safety. Could use something to hold on, seatbelts. Sunglasses, good value for money. So, you should go there, just one thing that's bad, too, my toddler sister lost pacifier. Like, mountain could be fenced.Visited December 2023Traveled with familyWritten February 16, 2024
- Josh MUnited Kingdom25 contributionsTable Mountain 🌁Not to be missed, if you are coming to Cape Town and this is not on your list I hope you’re going to add it! There are a few options for getting to table mountain, for the athletes amongst us you can hike (I didn’t have a death wish and wanted an ice cold Aperol Spritz at the end of the day), the hop on, hop off bus or you can use Uber, we opted for latter. We bought our tickets ahead of our trip (would recommend this as it was quite busy when we went). The cable car was brilliant with 360 degree views on both journeys up and down. At the top of the mountain you’ll find a shop, restaurant oh and some of the best views you’re going to get of Cape Town! With lots of walking routes, you can explore and take in all the sights, we took the MacLears Beacon route which took around an hour and half. Word of advice… take a jacket or jumper while the warm weather might fool you it can get pretty chilly up there!Visited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten February 18, 2024
- Patty BNashville, Tennessee1,456 contributionsBreathtaking ViewsThis is definitely a must do when visiting Cape Town. We were lucky the weather was good as fog can be a problem as well as fires. In fact it was closed down the day before because of fires. The view and ride up is fantastic. We walked around taking in the breathtaking view on this clear day. The aerial cableway provided a comfortable ride to the top. All of it was well worth the trip. After reading the disappointment others experienced with long waits, we avoided all of that with our wonderful tour company Jaret. I will be writing a review for them shortly. Simply put they are amazing and handled our tours of Cape Town professionally. They were recommended by The One & Only where we stayed as well as the Cape Grace. We could not have been happier. All our tickets were obtained by them in advance and we walked right into all the attractions.Visited January 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten February 28, 2024
- Calgaryskichick438 contributionsBeautiful view, would recommendThis is an amazing view of the city of the ocean and the mountains. Free GPS audio tour is good. Download the app before you get there. It should be updated though some of the signs referred to are no longer there. It would be better if the last cable car down was a bit later given that sunset was happening just when the last cable car was going down. Do not use the white booth to buy an online ticket. It does not work. I had a delicious latte and cheesecake while watching the sun set.Visited March 2024Traveled soloWritten March 3, 2024

What an experience, the cable ride is a quick 4 minute ride so if are scared of heights no need to be it’s over in a blink of an eye. We completed the McLears Beacon walk (90minute) round trip from the top viewing area. A great hike with magic views back to Cape Town and Caves Beach. More people turned up before the first cable car at 8:00am. The cable car holds 64 people and has a rotating floor, so you get great panoramic views on the trip. I spent about 40 minutes at the top and there was only one other person in the cable car on the way down. This was a fantastic experience.Visited March 2024Traveled soloWritten March 14, 2024

I understand it just depends on the timing of when you get there as sometimes it can be a wait. Absolutely stunning views. The top area is huge and you could spend at least an hour up there walking all around. Several food options and also a gift shop. Going up Table Mountain with the cable car is a phenomenal experience! Many people will only get to do this once, but I've had the privilege of doing it 5 times, with the 1st time being as a primary school kid in the mid 80s. Since then, the old cable cars have been replaced with far superior ones that revolve as one ascends and descends from the mountain. When doing this on a bright and sunny day, as we did in Nov 2023, the views are out of this world! The only parts I don't like about the ride is that it's jam packed (due to its popularity) and it's very short (although that could be a plus for those wanting to spend as much time as possible on the mountain). I hiked up Table Mountain once as well, back in 2005, but with many hikers being attacked since then, the cable way is really the sensible way of going up this famous mountain. I'd recommend going up in the afternoon, as we did, since the tickets are less expensive then and you'd get to take the best pictures after 15:00. If you're taking the red bus, like we did, it's a good idea to get your cable car tickets at the same time, as it saves time when getting to the mountain.

We bought a fast track ticket with a 5 day option to use any day which gave us the option to wait for a clear morning . Fortunately we were able to go on a day with no cloud and spectacular views. The cable car was very smooth . It was a great experience and we would definitely choose fast track again in the future.

You can buy your tickets in advance (morning prices more expensive than afternoon): this avoids the queue to buy them, that's something...
You can buy them skip-the-line and there, you avoid the queue to get on AND the one to get off (at 3 p.m. it was 45 min). Table Mountain: It might take a while.
The restaurant upstairs was packed with people at lunchtime, in August, a quiet period and the menu was not great...

Taking the cable car to the top of Table Mountain is definitely a must do activity while in Cape Town. In the summer months when the weather is generally good, buying tickets in advance will save you time on cueing for tickets, but not on waiting for the cable car. During busy times, cues can easily be 2 to 3 hrs for the cable car, so come prepared with water, sunscreen, and sunhats. During the less busy shoulder seasons such as spring and fall, I'd recommend to get tickets on the spot, as the weather is more unpredictable. Wait for a nice, clear day, and then go up the maintain. We went up on a cloudless day in early May, and as it was such a beautiful day, it seemed like every single tourist in Cape Town was going up with the cable car at the same time. There was no cue for tickets but about an hour long cue to go up with the cable car. Please note that there is no need to rush to get ahead of others and/or crowd the doorways of the cable car to get in first so you can have the best spot for photos. The floor of the cable car gently rotates, so that everybody will get to see the same views. A the top of the mountain the views are spectacular. Its nice to wander around and enjoy the nature and the scenery. but it can be very windy up there so bring a jacket to have handy no matter what the season. There are food/beverage/bathroom facilities and a gift shop. How much time you need at the top will vary for everybody but 1 to 2 hrs is a good guideline, unless the weather turns bad or the winds are very strong.

Fast and nice way to climb the top of Table Mountain. The queues usually take hours. In this case, it is worth buying the Fast Track ticket, in order to save time. It costs a little less than double, but it reduces the waiting time from 1h or 2h to less than 15 minutes. Anyway, when I went (June 2024) I was lucky. It was very quiet to go up with the regular ticket.
The interior of the cable car may be a little bulky (capacity 64 passengers), but the view is worth it. I preferred to go up and down on foot, but I had another tour after the Table Mountain.

I pushed back on the Fast Track tickets as an extra £50 seemed ridiculous ontop of £50 for a 2minute cable car ride but after 45minutes we got to the main building and I asked roughly how long, to be told another 50min I succummed and we upgraded at the ticket office.
Suffice to say we were up, had quick walk, photos and back down probably before we would have got up in first place so prob worth the extra but just do from the outset!
Views are stunning, ride over very quickly, slightly disconcerting when open window spins round and your phone is dangling out the window!!
Not sure about the 7 staff and trolley taking up 5 or 6 spaces on way back when they only stopped 4 people but we squished in.......

Main attraction of Cape Town , the price is high about 25/30€ each (the four of us with two girls aged 10 and 11 spent 65€ (remind you that for foreigners prices change in South Africa) , but it is worth it for the view for the gondola and for walks on Table Mountain. If you get there with your car the car parks remain along the road, with several people who will help you park and show you where to park (remember to tip him 5/10 Rend) then continued even beyond the gondola. At the top you have the opportunity to eat or have a snack with an exceptional view. Not to be missed. I recommend out of season (so our summer ) you can also not book at any time you will not find queues , while it does not apply to the summer of South Africa be prepared for endless queues under a scorching heat , so book . Duration Approximately 3 h with short walks along the paths adjacent to the escarpments , more if you make all the routes provided .

5 hours of waiting for 1 hour of sad entertainment on top of nothing on Table Mountain, just foodcourts/restaurants that charges 1000% markup on captivated tourists who have no where else to go and buy food.. So SAD!!
I definitely don't and won't recommend this to tourists; time will be better spent at wine farms than this excuse of tourist entrapment.

Great experience and well worth it.
We drove up to the cable cars (past the park and ride), it’s certainly busy, but the parking attendant guys are brilliant at directing you to a space.
We parked about a 10minutes walk from the entrance and had already bought our tickets online which id really recommend. You can buy a whole day ticket, or an afternoon ticket. We knew that we’d be going up in the morning so got a whole day ticket but the afternoon ones are a little cheaper. You can also get a fast track ticket but we didn’t bother and queued for about 20 - 30 minutes on a Saturday morning.
The cable car turns and the middle has a step so everyone can see. The ride is pretty cool! At the top there’s coffee and cake, lots of seating, smoking area and lots of trails to walk. It’s great the different views from each side.
Certainly worth a visit. We spent about 3.5hours here

Firstly, Table Mountain is well worth the effort. The views are indeed spectacular. You can spend a good amount of time there on a glorious day.
I have one gripe, and I say this early to get it out of the way; please please sort your admin. If you close the cable for whatever reason, you have the email addresses of those who have booked. There is absolutely no reason you can let people know so that, particularly those who are not local, who might only have a couple of days in Cape Town and therefore want to make the most of their tight schedule, they can make the most of the time, and not have a wasted journey, cost of taxi ride money, disappointment that they didn't know their 25th anniversary sunset on Table Mountain experience wasn't happening. All of this could have been avoided with a really simple IT intervention. Just send people an email. It shouldn't be incumbent on all the individual customers to make contact each day to find out if the cable is open or not. Just let people know if the service they have booked is not going to be supplied. OK, end of rant!!!!
So, apart from that, I had thought we had a good enough view at the bottom of the cable on our aborted trip, and I wasn't much inclined to come back. However, my husband rearranged tickets and I'm so glad he did. It was well worth going to the top. The cable car is a good option, with a revolving platform so that no one misses out on the view on the way up and down. The fast track tickets are worth doing; be aware that it is a skip the ticket queue and you are allowed in the 'pen' ready for the next available cable car.
There are cafe facilities at the top. When we arrived the queue was manageable because we were very early. By the time we were finished and wanted a drink the queue was soooo long we didn't bother.
Overall, not just a tourist trap, it's definitely worthy of its reputation.

Written November 23, 2021
Muchas apologies for only replying now. I only got home last night after 217 days away to Antarctica. Re the Cableway, even if there is a queue the cable cars take quite a lot of people so waiting time is usually not much. However, be aware of wind forecasts, and it often blows on the mountain when down in the city it is calm. While I was away my family and friends went up to view the disas and as the wind had come up they could not take the car down and had to hike instead which is NOT easy on the legs.

Is there an option to just take the cableway down without the guide or the hop on/off bus?

Yes, sure and more than that whichever you like you can do;
Hiking, climbing, walking up or down with or without guide.

Hi,can l buy the ticket today in advance like for 19 September 2020
Written September 4, 2020
I would actually advise you to buy it in advance to avoid the queue...
However, in advance could be now but, it can also be a few hours before actually going. We did the latter just a few hours before, through our hotel concierge. We wanted to ensure that we could go up...
As soon as there is wind or other unfavourable weather conditions the cablecar doesn't work.
I have met many people who have been in Capetown for a few days but couldn't go up due to weather.
