We were disappointed in this bird park. Although the entrance fee for 'pensioners' was a more 390 Rand (less than £2) we found it full of bird cages (not always well labelled) and generally in a poor state of maintenance. It looked scruffy, unkept and dirty. The cafe was basic and did not serve coffee - only cold drinks. There are two walk through aviaries (but one was closed) and bird shows in the morning and afternoon. They did put on a bird show for us displaying (amongst others) a vulture and a pelican. We were the only guests and the guide personally walked us through the displays. Full marks for that! However we have been in much better bird parks and this one was a bit sad and unkept. I don't like writing such negative reviews when I am sure the staff her work hard. But the place need some serious investment and much better ways of displaying the birds.

Horrible experience!! Those poor birds are locked into cages that are too small, it’s terrible. You literally watch them go crazy! It’s a pure tourist attraction with no interest in actually caring for the birds. If you go here you are a supporter of animal abuse. We left the instant we arrived!

My wife and I visited the Umgeni Bird Park and were deeply saddened by the conditions in which the birds have to live. Many seem absent or sad, which is no wonder given the small cages and boredom they experience there. Birds should live in the wild, not behind bars. Anyone who wants to see what a parrot looks like should just Google it.

Hello,
I visited the bird park today with my daughter and I have to say that the accommodation of the animals really hurts me. Far too many birds in too small a space. This is definitely not a species-appropriate attitude for the birds as they have far too little space to fly. In addition, too few birds live together.
Release the birds!
Thanks!!

These poor creatures! This bird park is truly terrible. The birds are locked in cages that are much too small; they climb frantically on the bars, causing their beaks to break off, and they cannot fly. Due to extreme depression, they exhibit abnormal behavior. Please do not visit; instead, advocate for releasing these poor birds into the freedom they deserve!

Under any circumstances, do not come here. The birds are in terrible conditions, in cages much too small for them and aviaries packed far too tight. Multiple of the parrots at the park show signs of plucking their feathers, a self-mutilation behavior comparable to cutting in humans that they do when depressed, anxious or otherwise stressed. Vultures and hornbills were kept in cages with no space to fly like they are built to, which would cause their wing and breast muscles to suffer. The first cage you see when you enter the park is the cockatiel enclosure, and one of the first things I noticed was that many of the cockatiels had bald spots on their heads from fighting with the other cockatiels. The birds at this park are treated extremely poorly, and I regret ever financially supporting this park.

Please send these birds to fly free to Birds of Eden. They do not deserve to be held in captivity. Animals are not here for us to use for entertainment or for profit

Wonderful smaller park. Some enclosures are still closed due to the damage from the floods. Nice Cafe with tasty food and quick service. Parking is shaded. The free flight show is very sweet.

They clearly have no funds to maintain the park. It's such a shame that it has gone to rack and ruin. Please someone buy it so that can be restored to its previous glory. Those poor birds. What a shame and disgrace.
