spontaneously and without great expectations, I entered the Sasquatch office in mid-September. Most vendors had already ended the season, but the Sasquatch office was still open. Without hesitation and with a lot of enthusiasm the team of Sasquatch made it possible to take me still on a tour. Already the flight to Katmai National Park was breathtakingly beautiful, as we flew a small detour. On the ground came the second highlight: the bears. I would never have imagined to experience these animals so close. Accompanied by the team of Sasquatch, we felt safe at any time, even at close range to the animals.
Conclusion: Great team, absolutely recommendable!

Our bear-viewing adventure with Sasquatch was a highlight of our Alaskan vacation. Zach is a consummate pro and we felt completely safe and well taken care of in his plane and on the ground with the bears. And yes you will see bears. And they are wondrous and beautiful. Zach flew us over the glacier as we left the area - it was as awe-inspiring as watching the bears. I actually cried. Quite a moving experience all in all. Highly recommend Sasquatch Adventures.

I chose to treat myself to this experience for my birthday. Usually, I don't spend money on guided tours, but this was worth it. I believe there were 16 of us at Sasquatch, where they fitted us with hip waders (I suggest wearing 2 layers of socks - blisters). We were broken into groups of four and flew to Katmai National Park. Before landing, we did some flightseeing of Mt. Douglas - Beautiful!
Zach was our pilot/guide, and the landing on the beach was as smooth as a paved runway. Austin (also from Bainbridge Island) was the photographer. Both were excellent.
Depending on your group, be ready for a hike. We hiked about 5.5 miles. I don't think the other two groups covered that much ground. We saw five to six bears. The fish were late coming into the river (no one told them about our timeline), but we saw bears bottom fishing (hilarious and not very successful) and munching on ground vegetation.
The last sow we encountered, Zach initially thought, was a boar because she was so big. She had no qualms about our presence and continued munching towards us. You know she is close (20'-25') when Zach pulls out the bear flare! We stood silent for about 30 minutes, and she eventually walked by, giving us the side-eye. :)
It ended up getting VERY hot! Don't over pack your backpack (mistake); bring binos, a camera, sunglasses, a hat, water, sunscreen, and bug spray. You can purchase pictures via SmugMug if your camera isn't great.
Don't forget to tip your pilot/guide and photographer!

They're one in a million guys, no need to look any farther. If they have seats, take 'em. You're going to have a wondrous experience. Zach knows where to go and you'll not see another soul (outside the group) in this location. I am still stunned by how amazing this adventure was. By the way, we've done bear viewing with other local companies and they were good, Sasquatch was great!

We had an incredible Bear Tour with Sasquatch. Our pilot/guide, Zack, was welcoming, knowledgeable, and made us feel completely safe. Everyone at the office was incredibly pleasant and helpful. This is a once in a lifetime experience... I would not have missed it for the world and can't imagine a better company to do it with!

I highly recommend Sasquatch for your coastal bear viewing trip! Here is our story . . .
My son and I were in Homer and had previously signed up with a different provider to fly out for coastal bear viewing. Bad weather meant our original trip was cancelled, and honestly I didn't feel all that comfortable with the first provider. A local suggested we try Sasquatch, so I called and spoke with Zac, he and Nancy worked us into their schedule the next day . . .
Tim was our pilot and guide, we enjoyed and felt very safe with his flying and his guiding. Our group flew to a very remote beach on Katmai that was loaded with bears. We counted more than 30 in view at one time. Tim engendered our trust and confidence by very clearly explaining what to expect and how to behave. He described the bears' lifecycle, their seasonal patterns, how to detect when a bear is calm vs agitated, and he explained why the bears we visited were 'mellow' (his term) and how best to observe them without disturbing them. Over the course of our time there, several bears amble past us (one within about 15 meters), seemingly ignoring us. Tim also noticed when a bear show slight agitation with us, something I would not have detected, and we slowly and calmly gave the bear more space and the bear edged away.
A huge bonus of the trip was the flight-seeing on the way back - beautiful.
Finally at the end, we had a short meet and greet with some snacks and drinks to visit and discuss the trip.
Safety is paramount on a trip like this, in all cases I felt time Nancy, Zac and Tim were putting safety first,
My sense is Tim and Zac love their work, it shows in their quiet enthusiasm for flying and their advocacy, respect and concern for the wildness of the bears and Katmai.

To spend a day observing, safely and respectfully, to simply be among Katmai’s grizzlies was above and beyond the best experience we have ever had in Alaska and we used to live here! Tye, our pilot and guide, shared his insights and experiences and made our trip exceptional start to finish. I highly recommend Sasquatch Alaska Adventures.

Our group of 3 did an afternoon bear viewing tour in early July 2023 and we all loved it! This certainly was one of our favorite things we did on our trip to the Kenai Peninsula! Our guide and pilot was Tim, and there were two other pilots from Sasquatch that flew groups over and walked around the area with us (one of them that we talked with was Ty). Each plane held 6 people, including the pilot. Both of these pilots and guides had a lot of knowledge about the bears and understood their behavior. We flew to Katmai National Park near Mt. Douglas, landed on a beach and walked to a tidal flat where the bears were eating sedges. Our 3 groups were the only people there. Looking across the flat, we saw more than 20 bears. We walked in amongst the bears on the flat where the bears were free to move around us. We felt safe the entire time and even had one bear that did a bluff charge at our group but the guides were able to diffuse the situation with their behavior, although they had the bear flares out in their hands ready to use if they needed them. The guides all also carry a firearm, but said they had never needed to use them. The guide gave direction to the group as we moved amongst the bears so people didn’t do anything that accidentally threatened the bears. They said the coastal brown bear that live in Katmai are less aggressive than the grizzlies on the main land because of the plethora of resources for them.
Book your trip - you won’t regret it! It was an amazing opportunity to watch the bears in their natural environment and get a lot of great photos, all while feeling safe but being close to the bears.
My advice for the trip -
1. Dress very warmly and in layers. Heed their advice for thick wool socks - my feet and hands were the only things to get cold on this trip. I dressed with 4 layers on top - long-sleeved t-shirt, hooded sweatshirt, zip up fleece and lined rain jacket, fleece stocking hat and thin gloves. I wore legging under my pants, and they provide hip waders for everyone to wear for the entirety of the trip (you’ll leave your shoes back at the shop). We did walk through a river that went up to our knees so the waders were necessary (check them for holes when putting them on - a boot full of cold water would surely lessen the enjoyment of the trip). Next time, I would bring a thin down-alternative type jacket for a layer, and thicker gloves and a warmer hat with ear flaps - I put my hoods up but would have preferred not to so I could have better peripheral vision.
2. Don’t drink too much liquid before your trip. There is opportunity to go to the bathroom on the island in the bushes but with all the layer and the cold, it wouldn’t be pleasant.
3. Their trip check-list of things to bring suggests bringing lunch. We did a trip that started at 1 pm and got back at 9 pm. We took snacks and not a lunch and that was plenty - honestly we could have skipped eating all together, but some others brought sandwiches. The found a good spot away from the bears to eat while we waited for the tide to go out so we could cross the river. They were particular to say not to leave any crumbs so the bears don’t get habituated to human food and learn to associate people with food.
4. Be sure to bring binoculars and a good camera- some bears were farther away, but many bears close enough not to need binoculars. It was nice to be able to see them really close in the binoculars though.
5. Yes, it is an expensive excursion and we debated before we booked, but honestly can say it was worth the money, and in fact, would do it again if we get the opportunity.
6. One of the more famous spots to go in Katmai NP is Brooks Falls which is where the salmon run up the river and jump up the falls and the bears stand on top catching the fish - you probably have seen this in documentaries before. We considered that option but are so thankful we didn’t book that as they said our timing was before the salmon were running there. No salmon there means no (or few) bears, and groups that were going there (when we would have) were only seeing one bear periodically. (I didn’t find this information on the companies that were booking Brooks Falls tours). While I’d love to see Brooks Falls someday, I will be sure to check the timing of the salmon running first. Sasquatch guarantees you’ll see bears (or your money back) and will go to where the bears are at that time in the season.
7. Book with Sasquatch - they keep you safe and they understand bear behavior! They said there are pilots that take tourists out to see bears that are good pilots but don’t understand bear behavior - I certainly wouldn’t want to be among the bears without someone like that.

From the start we were treated kindly and given all information needed. Ty was an amazing pilot and guide who made us all feel comfortable in our surroundings while sharing the facts and his love of the surroundings. Added perk of a fly over a volcano! Do it on any trip to Homer....you will walk away with memories of a lifetime!

Are there weight restrictions for passengers on the flight?
northwiest

Their planes are small and take 5 passengers, and those planes usually have a weight limit. But if you have one passenger who weighs considerably more, then you could make that up by having fewer passengers, which would probably increase the price. As it's a day trip only, there is no need for a great deal of gear, but I think they are pretty accustomed to lots of camera gear with their guests. The folks who own the company would always be happy to let you know the answers to these questions.

Not sure about prices because our trip was part of a package deal included in our lodge stay. Sorry. All staff working there are really nice if I were you I would call the number provided on their website and inquire about prices. It's an amazing trip at one time on the trip we were surrounded by 13 grizzly bears. Tons of fun.

Sorry, we didn't go fishing. If you want a great bear watching trip try Sasquatch Alaska. Call and speak to Zak or Tim. You will not be disappointed. They run great trips. If you want good reasonably priced food try Maura's or Vida's Thai food
