About
Alcatraz and Tolinga—two tiny islands that make up Tortuga Island, off the Costa Rican coast—make for a perfect day trip in the Puntaneras region. Take a catamaran tour from Montezuma to spot dolphins frolicking in the ocean on your way to the islands. When you get there, you can snorkel with fish in the turquoise waters or relax on Isla Tortuga’s white-sand beaches. There are plenty of rum cocktails for grownups to sip on. More adventurous travelers can go kayaking or hiking through the jungle. Beat the crowds by getting there in the early morning. – Tripadvisor

Just as we suspected, this area is grossly overrun with tour boats, and sadly it shows in the lack of fish and the dead coral all around. Our "all day snorkeling trip" was 30 minutes in one spot and 30 minutes in another with the same view of nothing. Other boats with the party atmosphere were load and annoying, food scraps thrown in the water to attract what little fish were there-gross. Had lunch on the island that was decent given the layout but the company we used didn't tell you in advance of your tour that you have to pay to use the restroom, pay to use a lounge chair ($10) and pay to hike the trail ($6 each) available for something to do. So imagine 300+ people using the ocean right off the beach instead of the restroom.....the highlight was the hike we took, we ran across one other couple during this approx. 1 1/2 mile hike. The views were beautiful. Note that the trail is rough with sharp rocks and tree roots so hiking in flip flops probably not the best idea. Not knowing the trail was available we were in water socks, so it was doable..

Snorkelling was mediocre and crowded with significant currents around the areas of best potential. The island is beautiful and highly commercialized. The beach is rocky.

We were expecting a trip to a beautiful island like the one we took recently to the San Blas Islands in Panama. Nope.

Instead, this island is crowded, touristy and expensive.

There are tons of people, a souvenir shop, some bars and other stuff.

Definitely not like the islands you might visit in Asia or other countries. The water was okay to swim in, calmer than the rough seas on the mainland.

I would recommend springing your time and money doing something else.

Great time snorkeling and having coco locos on the beach with wild pigs. We used Zuma tours and were very happy.

I expected a peaceful sanctuary..it is a very small beach and was crowded..in addition it was very noisy with loud music playing and lots of people drinking alcohol..there was no place on the beach to get away from people and all the noise..there is a short trail and then a longer one which was probably better than staying on the beach..

I went on this day trip thinking it was probably overpriced and just going to be like a day on any other private cruise island. Wrong! We were able to see a whale and leatherback turtles on the boat trip. The island and views were beautiful. Snorkeling was magic, like being in a giant aquarium with fish surrounding us. The staff was unbelievably attentive and enthusiastic, great people who made all the difference. You don’t have to be athletic. The food was excellent although one member of our party wasn’t fond of the free margaritas or rum punch. I have spent a lot of time in Costa Rica and this is the one adventure I will definitely go on again next trip. Far better than their competitors. Just loved every minute of it.

Amazing island, calm water, we we're a party of 8 looking to avoid the paked tours, tortuga island was geat. The only way to get there is by speed boat. It's is a ride of 45 min from Puntarenas, on way we saw spider monkeys. We sail on a Big boat with a small group of 12. From Puntarenas boat leaves at 8:30.

TORTUGA island is beautiful. Know that the only way to go is by a tour, and these are VERY touristy and designed for folks who are going to party and get drunk. It’s a college party atmosphere. Loud music and lots of people flirting with the boat crew. It’s not really for people who want to convene with nature or local culture. As long as you understand what you’re getting into and you are ok with it, you can make what you want of the experience. The boat ride was nice but don’t expect to see wildlife on the trip. The snorkeling was also pleasant, but the reef is mostly dead coral. You will see fish but sadly not much other life on the reef; like most of our coral reefs globally, these are dying. The coastal scenery is the highlight of the trip, along with deer and iguanas on the adjacent forest trail. The food was also very good and the kids who crew the boat did a great job taking care of everyone.

This is what they don’t advertise;

From the time we arrived at the dock until we arrived back at the dock we were treated like royalty. When we sat down we were given some fruit and a drink. After we got to the island everything was uphill. I just (about 7 weeks) had surgery on my face for melanoma and had to stay out of the sun. They made sure we had lounge chairs that stayed shaded all day.
There was not even a minute that I didn’t have a beverage of choice in my hand. I tried to snorkel but the face mask was painful on my face so they let me just swim around the boat.

Lunch was delicious, plentiful and healthy.

This crew is top notch and I highly recommend them.

Thanks guys and gals for a great da”
