All reviews drake bay ranger station costa rica scarlet macaws sirena station boat ride day trip la leona puerto jimenez hiking boots surcos tours an adventure flora and fauna beautiful place great guide bull sharks san pedrillo
Although the hike is long and difficult it is definitely doable and a truly amazing experience! We travelled as a family, and we ALMOST did not go, as I worried about the cost which was high for us. However, I am SO glad we did!...More
We did a three-day two-night tour starting at Carate (shuttle form Puerto Jimenez) and ending at Drake Bay. The park was well-maintained, secluded, and with loads of interesting and beautiful wildlife. For us it was our best national park in Costa Rica - great for...More
Approximately 30 minute Boat ride from Drakes Bay. Wear shorts, t shirt, hiking shoes. If you are going to San Pedrilla then take waterproof shoes for river crossings, also swim wear if you want to swim in the waterfall pool. You can wear long sleeves...More
This was my third trip to Corcovado, and my 3rd entry point. This time we went in at the Sienna ranger station. Saw lots of critters. Saw all 4 monkeys-spider, howler, white faced and squirrel. Tons of birds including crested carousel, and tucans. Saw peckerys, and...More
With so many diverse ecosystems in a small peninsula there is an abundance of unique wildlife. The trail I traveled from Carate was well maintained. You are required to have a guide and a permit to enter the park. We had to arrange the permit...More
We enjoyed the park though we didn't see any tapirs, which we had hoped to see. We saw Scarlet Macaws, two monkey species, and many plants on the San Pedrillo visit. Maybe if we had done an evening tour we would have seen tapirs but...More
We booked a 2 night stay with OSA Adventures and the guide William was really the best. He has a lot of knowledge as he grew up in the forest. We saw a snake, tapir, monkeys, slots, birds, crocodile etc. We even crossed the river...More
We did a half-day trip with Pacheco tours and had a wonderful time.
We also visited the Caribbean coast and Monteverde, but this was hands-down the best place to see wildlife. Our guide, Carlos, helped us to find everything from termites to a resting tapir....More
We visited a number of national parks but this was probably our favourite
There was plenty of wildlife to see with the advantage of hiking trails that were of a good length and included walking on scenic and virtually deserted beaches
We would thoroughly recommend
Corcovado is the jewel of the National Parks in Costa Rica...so many animals, a beautiful and wild setting without all the inconveniences of the jungle - not too many people and definitely not too many scary crawlers!
It was one of the best time we’ve...More

You can definitely do a hike in the Corcovado area, however, the only way to go all the way into the park to one of the Ranger stations is either a long hike (about 7-8 hours from Carate to La Sirena) or boat from Drake Bay to La Sirena (open water - not sure how "choppy" the water would be). I think you would still enjoy a day hike and hike in from Carate to the entrance of Corcovado (La Leona Ranger Station - a good part of the walk is on the beach, about 3 km, so early morning would be recommended). Once you pass La Leona you are on a forest trail and you could do a short hike. You will have to have a guide by law, and honestly, it is so worth it, as the guides will point out the amazing plants and animals, that you would otherwise miss. We used Roger from Ficus Tours, and could not have had a better experience. I am sure that if you contact them, they will be able to suggest awesome hikes that meet your needs. Corcovado area is really amazing. We also stayed in Cabo Matapalo and the amount of nature there is amazing, if you decided not to go to Corcovado, that would be another option. You could do some shorter hikes there. All the best!

Well worth visiting Corcovado and it's not really too far to drive to get to Sierpe. It's a good road and you make good time. You have to wait for a boat from Sierpe to Drake and that takes time but I think that is due to the tides. Corcovado has primary forest, which is fantastic, and hardly any people - unlike Manuel Antonio which we found to be very commercial.
I have been to both places. Tortuguero is more eclectic and like being in the Caribbean. Corcovado is more of being in the wild- jungle and many animals. If you like being out in the jungle- you’ll have fun in Corcovado... More
I have been to both places. Tortuguero is more eclectic and like being in the Caribbean. Corcovado is more of being in the wild- jungle and many animals. If you like being out in the jungle- you’ll have fun in Corcovado. There are a few places where you can stay comfortably even though the place is very remote. Look out Inn is the best! Stayed there at least five times.
