Don't rush through this fabulous park. If you are patient you will see (as we did) sloths, racoons, coati, monkeys, squirrels, and even had the pleasure of a turtle hatchling release on Playa Grande at the end. We didn't even have time for a swim as they are very strict about closing time!

Visited the Cahuita national park today as a day trip from Puerto Viejo.

LOGISTICS
- We got a bus there and back.
- The bus schedule should be attached to this review. Got the 0920 bus from puerto Viejo and then the 1550 bus back from cahuita.
- The cost of the tickets was 1050 colon there and then (curiously) the lesser price of 1010 colon back
- You can purchase your bus tickets from the driver as neither of the ticket places were open.
- From the bus station at Cahuita the entrance to the park (northern end - Kelly creek side) is a perhaps 500m walk.

PRICE
- There is no actual ticket price but a donation of 5 USD is suggested if you enter from the town of Cahuita (Kelly creek side). Apparently there is a second entrance on the south side you will be charge 5 USD.

THE PARK
- The park reminded me a lot of Manuel Antonio park. It consisted of around 8km of trails and a beautiful beach near the entrance (playa blanca) which was perfect for a swim.
- The park opened at 0800 and closed at 1600. Last entry was at 2pm.
- You can hire a guide here for 35 USD at the entrance. We didn’t find one to be necessary though.
- We walked to Punta Puerto Vargas, then turned around and went back, as this was about 4km from the entrance and we didnt want to walk the full 8km only to turn around and go back again. Retrospectively a better idea would be to actually get the bus to drop you of near puerto Vargas entrance and walk it in a south to north direction. This would allow you to complete the full trail without backtrack. It would also allow you to finish at Playa Blancas for a swim at the end, which looked like the most attractive swimming option. You don’t want to go for a swim then walk 8km.
- The trail was fairly decent. There were no river crossings.
- There was three freshwater showers and change rooms near the Kelly creek entrance.
- We saw 6 sloths (including 2x mothers with babies), numerous raccoons, a agoutis, numerous lizards. We didnt have a guide. Where there is a sloth there is usually a adjacent group of people so just look for that.

Overall this was a high quality park at a really reasonable price (including bus trips barely 8USD). It makes a wonderful day trip from Puerto Viejo.

Great natural park with wild animals and a beach connected to it. Easy, flat walk and shaded. Saw monkeys, sloths, and others.

We lived at small beach town Cahuita. And walk to the National Park with our private tour guide Michael. The entrance to the park is donation base. Highly recommended our tour guide Michael. He charged $35 each. My mom is non English or Spanish speaker. So, I need to translate to my mom what Michael told us. Michael is so patience and friendly. We saw 13 sloths on the whole trip and many other animals, such as male Jesus lizard and male Jesus Lizard. We even tried a local fruit Jobo in the park. He also taught us how to find sloth. Nice park with a good experience guide.

Absolutely gorgeous. Huge stretches of beach with gorgeous palm and almendra trees and driftwood that looked like it was styled by a magazine. Saw tons of interesting animals and multiple places perfect for swimming with children. We went on a snorkeling tour and it was fantastic. Definitely different than the reputation of Costa Rican snorkeling. We went and expecting nothing and it was some of the best we have done in the Caribbean. Recommend Macro tours with Capitán Minor and the guide Aerner who was finding interesting things under the sea all over the place!

Great walking path and well maintained park! Beautiful beaches, just beware of strong currents and swim in the designated areas. I saw many animals such as monkeys, raccoons, blue morpho butterflies, and endless lizards.

Entrance fee is in the amount of a donation, what a lovely policy! I did the full walking trail starting from the entrance in Cahuita and taking the bus back to the city after. Good to note that this bus at the end runs every hour, costs 565 colones (2022) and the trails close at 2pm. Sometimes there are taxis waiting at the end of the trail but I found them to be quite expensive.

I loved the park ! We took a guide and I don’t regret that decision because we saw a lot of animals that I know I wouldn’t see it if the guide didn’t tell me. We saw 12 sloths, many monkeys and many more animals. If you visit this park national take a guide !

The national park is in Cahuita town which is a small but beautiful town. If you enter by Playa Blanca entrance, adjacent to the town of Cahuita, the fee is a voluntary contribution in cash.

We parked our car on “ Restaurante National Park ” parking lot just outside the park for $5. The trails were easy and well shaded with lots of wildlife watching opportunites. Definetely will come back

Nice walking path. Caribbean sea on one side and the woods on the other. Seen monkeys, sloths and an iguana on the walk. I was told the park was free but was asked for money upon entering. I offered a small donation and they accepted. Was worth it. I recommend if you are in the area.

Gorgeous National park. Plenty of wildlife and gorgeous beaches. Donations only- which seem to be enforced :) But worth it as it goes towards conservation.
