Conveniently located, people come here to relax, or collect a new experience from several options on beach or water.

Our guesthouse was situated right on Playa Negra Beach. While the sand is black it's a beautiful stretch of sea side to spend a few hours sunning, swimming or playing in the sand. Depending on the time of year, you might find locals and their families celebrating holidays with seaside barbeques, playing games and swimming but more often, the beach is scarcely populated. We have been there when we were the only people there right through to our most recent visit where it was packed with Costa Ricans on holidays! Along the beach there are restaurants where you can get refreshments if you haven't brought your own. Many people sing the praises of the white sand beach but a black beach is no different other than the colour!!

Coming from Florida it's hard to beat our beaches. This beach was beautiful and empty. Can't believe the 5 days we were there hardly any people. Felt like we had the beach to ourselves. Even got to go horseback riding on the beach.

Not too many people on this beach.
The sand really is dark.
Water was warm, but not too clear due to the waves and the black sand.

We visited this beach not as a classic beach goers but just to see the black sand. We hadn't had one with us but apparently the sand is magnetic so if you plan to go there do bring a magnet to test it. As I said, we couldn't but our guide told us the sand would stick to the magnet. Regarding the beach as a beach, I wouldnt go there for swimming. We did see two life guards on duty but while we were there all were tabled with red "rip tides" flag so one couldn't go into the water anyhow.

The sand here is black. That’s all the specials about this beach. You can go there by car or bicycle the Ocean is all the coastline the same. Actually here is nothing special. Don’t waste your time.

So many conflicting reviews demonstrating poor awareness of seasonal differences. You would not go to Vermont in summer and complain that the downhill skiing was dangerous. So please do not blame one of the world's most beautiful natural beaches for the calendar or weather. If you are coming to Cahuita and know why, you will not be disappointed.

This beach was easy to access by foot from town and is very different from the beached of Cahuita Park. It was nice to access a new beach while in the area but we didn't feel the need to go there more than once. It was nice to have a walk along the full length of the beach but there isn't a great deal of beach that doesn't get washed out by waves making it tricky to find a dry spot to settle in to when there are many visitors.

The waves were not too big and came close together, making it fun to play in. There are spots under the trees if you want shade. Water was very comfy temperature, no undertow,

The beach is narrow with ferocious waves sweaping in from the carribean. The sand is back and a tad muddy.
This place is great for surfing but not for normal beach goers.
