So, I need to spend time outdoors. Waiting on friends to get off work. Next to City Hall. Enjoyed the sunshine, and trains came by often sounding their majestic horns.

This little town of Irondale, AL has a real Train Watching platform so it is easy to see trains passing by all through the day. There is a train car on site as well. This is a must see in Irondale to see real train operations!

Was really looking forward to this after the great reviews; and ended up disappointed. I thought there would be trains going constantly but for the almost half hour, that my toddler, husband & I waited; no trains came by. We went between 11am-12pm. I wish there would have been some way to know the best times to go so we would have got to truly enjoy it. Maybe we'll have better luck in the future, if we decide to go back.

I live by this attraction and see its popularity on a daily basis. It's rare for me to drive by and not see some watching the trains. Being at the entrance/exit to one of the largest yards in the state makes for lots of trains to experience. If you're into trains, this is the place to be!

Trains are shuffling through this intersection of 4 tracks continuously all day. You are guaranteed to see trains up close and personal! If you have little kids who love trains you've got to see this place. Pretty awesome with lots of history across the street at the Irondale Cafe.

The platform is next to the Norfolk Southern mainline - and at the thread of a large yard. There are seats there (and parking is posted for 2 hours). I saw trains from 4 different roads in the short time I was there. One negative - no restroom facilities. One of the gentlemen I met suggested the library - about a long block away.

The platform is right beside the tracks across the street from the Irondale Cafe. Ever heard of the movie "Fried Green Tomatoes" ? Based on the goings on at the cafe. Some days there is lots of movement of trains and other days it is slow........ always fun.........

If you are eating at the Irondale Cafe, you are likely to be held up by VERY LONG freight trains. So, just relax, you will be here a while. Visit the train watching platform across the street. It is open, but is covered with a nice roof to shield you from the hot sun.

Since my son was 2, I have been taking him to watch the trains in Irondale. He is 10 and still loves to do it. He stills waves at the conductors, who blow their horn for him.
My son loves the trains, and we will sit and on the covered platform and watch the trains. There is a red caboose across the tracks from the train platform that my son has been climbing on since he was two. Definitely a hit with any child that loves trains!
Free, and a great way to make magical memories with your children.
This mom gives it 2 thumbs up!

2nd time visiting the platform. Saw a number of freight trains passing through as well as Amtrak passing. 4 tracks along with a siding to enjoy. It is covered as well.
