This temple devoted to lord Shiva and goddess Parvati is one of the oldest
Temples in this part of the country. History reckons that it is over 2000 years old
And there are references to it in the records dating back to early AD.
In 16th century Portugese invaders destroyed the temple and it was rebuilt
Thereafter. One can therfore say in its present form it is over 300 years old
This temple and its precincts is clean and well maintained and so is the administration. There is an eminent body of Trustees looking after its affairs and it is very laudable.
The presiding deities, lord Siva (Kapaleeswarar) and his consort, goddess Parvati ( Karpagambal ) are worshipped with devotion and love by millions of devotees from all corners of the globe who throng the temple throughout the year
It is a firm belief that the god/goddess grant the wishes of all the devotees who pray to them sincerely
There is a clean and well maintained Tank opposite to the temple and in the month of Feb
a Float Car festival is held .Again in the month of March every year , a 10 day festival called Brahmotsavam is held with piety and devotion with thousands of people participating
I would recommend a visit to this temple to every traveller visiting Chennai and the time spent is well worth it, At any point of time one can spot a group of foreigners visiting this temple
