I naively expected more of the oldest authenticated tree in the world but that said I still enjoyed the visit as it was interesting to see all the pilgrims and their devotion.

This is one of the trees that is said to be an offspring of the one where Buddha was enlightened. Regardless of 'truth', the place offers spirituality and for us held more magic than Western churches, for example. A must-see when you are anywhere close.

as an archeological sight its pretty dispapointing. Obviously for budhists it's a scared and special place, but for everyone else its pretty meh

Jayasri maha bodhi entrance is free. The common ticket covers other historical places like Jethawanaramaya Stupa, Abhayagiriya Stupa etc. The price is around 25 USD as i can remebmber.
