We stayed a day at the falls and it was a panacea to cool off from the heat of Morocco in August. The water is crystal clear and very cool. Some practical tips that might come in handy: We went to the falls by collective taxi (Grand Taxi) from Chefchaouen at a cost of 25 MAD per person. The collective taxi is taken at the bus station and is easily found via Google Map. The classic taxi costs about 400 MAD round trip. We do not recommend the car because the road is narrow with many hairpin bends and the asphalt not much. Besides there are a lot of people and a lot of cars so parking is a problem. You have to cross the stalls until you reach the bridge on the left. To go all the way to the farthest waterfall and then to the end, you have to cross the bridge and continue for about an hour and a half. In August the waterfall is "unloaded" but the pollens of water where to swim are many. The route is doable by everyone but at certain points you have to be careful because you have to cross rocks or pass into the water (that's why at the stalls at the beginning they sell rubber sandals that we bought and that were very useful - 30 MAD). Along the way you will find plenty of refreshment points where you can buy water and eat tajin (only that exists so if you do not want to buy more before arriving at the bridge). We loved it and would recommend it. Good bath if you go in the suitable season

The Akchour waterfalls are well worth a visit. They are only a short drive away from Chefchaouen. We visited on a weekend and so it seemed busy and there was a bit of queuing but it wasn’t really a problem. There is plenty of parking close by. We were in our hire car and only had to pay a nominal fee to one of the parking / car guards.
The walk towards the falls then takes you past cafes, shops and places where you can get snacks / water. You then follow the pathway to the bridge and at this point you can then take one of two routes.
We chose the route to visit the bridge of God. It was a lovely walk but quite challenging in parts. In my opinion you don’t need a guide. You can’t really go wrong and if there are any issues there are so many friendly people around that will happily assist.
It was very hot when we visited and the shaded areas running alongside the river were a welcome relief.
The bridge of God was impressive and we were pleased we saw it.
On the way back we stopped to swim in the pools and have mint tea and food at one of the many cafes along the route. These cafes are lovely because their tables and chairs are nestled into small places in the rocky hillside, affording you wonderful views.
For our visit I was fairly impressed at the overall cleanliness of the place. Having visited much of Morocco, unfortunately I cannot say the same with some of the other visitor attractions.
The water here is clean and fresh and the colour of it just beautiful. I really appreciated the nature and the drive to the falls. There’s lots to see and many places to stop and spend time at. The photo opportunities are great too.

3 of us rented a grand taxi at DH400 from door to door, bringing us to Akchour Waterfalls & God’s Bridge in 45 minutes from Chefchaouen.
Facing the dam, the right trail led to God’s Bridge and the left trail led to the cascades.
It's about 2 hours round trip hike to God’s Bridge. The most challenging part - 10 minutes from reaching God’s Bridge was the bamboo bridge crossing over rapids. There was a shower on that day and the bridge was slippery.
After a light snack, we continued to the cascades which took us 4 hours round trip. We passed by many small cascades but unable to find the grand cascade. We were told by some people that there was no water at the grand cascade.
Overall, it was a easy to moderate grade hike involving scrambling over rocks and streams.

There are 2 hikes available here. Unfortunately we had to settle for the much shorter one because of our tight schedule. It was quite an easy hike, with very beautiful and scenic views of the water. The water was very clear but it was very cold in autumn to dive in, even in summer I assume it would be too cold. Still it was very joyable to just put your feet in the cold water while enjoying a glass of Moroccan tea.

WARNING! Whilst these fall are super pretty and the walks around it are beautiful, we all got sick the evening after swimming in them. We met numerous families who also got sick after swimming in them. Our hotel (Ermitage Akchour), unfortunately did not warn us about this until we told them we had been swimming and we’re now sick, and then they nodded sympathetically and said ‘oh yes, it’s not wise to drink or submerge yourself in the pools’. Would have been lovely to know before so we could have prevented our 6 year old vomming all night. Swim in them at your own peril!

It is a beautiful place in nature! So many small and large waterfalls, pools with super clear water, diverse flora and small, friendly restaurants right by the water.
Warning: the climb up to the huge waterfall at the end of the hike is only for hikers! 2 hours and a decent climb! It was still worth it! Even without a lot of water! We all found it impressive! And everyone went swimming, women and men! Everyone was super nice! I can neither understand nor even remotely approve of the previous negative comments! Chefchaouen is one of the cleanest and most beautiful Moroccan cities I have ever visited in this country! The friendliness of the residents is very much appreciated. I will definitely come back!

From Chefchaouen main bus terminal the grand taxi fare is MAD 25, this is sharing a taxi if six people. As we are here off season, we took a taxi for the two of us and it cost MAD 150 each way.
It's a 40 minute trip up into the mountains with dramatic mountain scenary on the way and the return journey.
To do the hike its free.
Highly recommended and relatively easy to do. Take energy snacks and water. We bought dates from the local kiosk for 5 dirrams.

The place is very beautiful, it is definitely worth the taxi ride from Chefchaouen. Be careful, the walk back to the Pont de Dieu is very wet. We quickly get our feet wet, in summer this shouldn't pose a problem but in winter it's less cool! Finally an unpleasant remark, there is plastic everywhere.
It's crying to see these magnificent landscapes polluted by plastic. More than ever, we must tax manufacturers who continue to vomit their products packaged in plastic. The Kingdom of Morocco must join the countries waging war on plastic.

If you only have a couple of days in Chefchauen, then spend the time exploring the narrow streets and taking photos of the beautiful blue buildings in the sunlight.
The waterfalls are a big disappointment and a waste of time. A 20km drive from chefchauen, you have to pay for parking and then begin the walk up a well maintained trail to the first 4 waterfalls.
Quite honestly, if you have traveled in the US or Europe, then you have seen far better.
Our guide suggested that we walk to the big waterfall which only runs/is accessible at certain times of the year.
It was a 5 mile hard slog each way, along partially unmade trails and across rickety stepping stones and fallen trees.
You need to be quite agile and fit.
There were no signposts, so it would be impossible to find your way without a local guide.
The river, banks and trail were full of trash. Apparently, they clean it up monthly but that would be a mammoth task if it is true.
We had chicken tagine and mint tea at the top waterfall.
It took us a full day and miraculously, we arrived back unscathed.
I wish we had given them a miss and used the time to explore Chefchaouen instead.

Best part of Chefchaouen honestly. Go all the way until at least the Petit Cascade and sit in one of the many great spots to dip your feet whilst having some Achay tea. We'll worth the easy-moderate hike. The man in the first restaurant coming from the parking lot is a great soul and can sing beautiful poems. Enjoy!

Hi! Is this a difficult hike to do if I have a baby strapped to me in a carrier? Both my husband and I are not seasoned hikers. How would you rate the hike as far as difficulty?
Written November 15, 2019
I would say is an easy hike... You'll have some parts where you have to walk on a more steeper path but it's still very easy... Also you have to cross the river sometimes, it was easy as well but maybe with a baby you need to have extra careful... If you don't want to go until the end still the hike is very pleasant and you can enjoy it anyway... You'll have many stops by the river where you can seat and there's food and drinks served...

Hello can I ask you if a low ankle sneaker will be fine and if it is necessary to go into the water with them? So that I can decide to bring an old one )maybe better?) ? Haha thanks a lot!

Hi all,
Probably a silly question but.. I was wondering what the dress code for women was like during the summer months? Is it common to see women swimming in the usual swimwear etc? Also, is there taxi's waiting to go back to Chefchaouen? Thanks in advance!
Written April 30, 2019
I visited in February so the temps were not good for swimming . It is a mountain stream which goes along the hiking trail so I would think there may be wading in warm months.and I would err on the cautious side with respect to swimwear.
at the base of the trail there is a small cafe and always taxis to be had. Assuming you take a taxi to get to the trail ( it is some distance from Chef) he may wait for you if you ask.
