- Claire ADoha, Qatar25 contributionsBeautiful red sandsAs someone who lives in a desert environment (Arabian) I wasn’t expecting it to be so spectacular, but I was pleasantly surprised. The red sands makes it feel like you are off this earth and I would recommend a safari ride to go and explore the different land formations. We stayed in one of the ‘Marian tents’ which just added to the experience. Beautiful scenery!Visited April 2022Traveled with familyWritten December 15, 2022
Totalmente recomendable! Everything was perfect, from the Jeep tour we did with his father where they showed us the whole desert, they cooked food for us in the desert and we also did sandboarding. The place is spectacular and the attention from the family as well. We had dinner at the camp, the food was delicious and prepared by them in the desert! Totally recommended!Visited January 2023Traveled with familyWritten January 13, 2023
- Roger SEl Vendrell, Spain37 contributionsAwesome!Awesome desert! I stood there on January 2023 and I can say it was an incredible experience. We went on a 4x4 tour and we could saw some nice and special places there (where Lawrence of Arabia lived, a rock bridge, a big mushroom, some walls where climbers climb...), but the best I recommend, is to spend a morning or even a day at your own there. You will need a GPS like a sportswatch or having really good skills on orientation, because you can get lost easily.Visited January 2023Written January 16, 2023
- Agata WWarsaw, Poland508 contributionsReal Jordan's highlightWadi Rum is a must do when in Jordan. Amazing experience not only for nature lovers. Is possible, take full day tour to fully enjoy what Wadi Rum has to offer. Good shoes are required, as in many places rock climbing is requisite. Great views, pictures and memories guaranteed.Visited October 2022Written January 20, 2023
- Musicians Mum557 contributionsAwesome sceneryDrove from the visitors centre in 4 x 4 to desert camp. Watched sun go down where Lawrence of Arabia once amassed beduin tribes and David Lean filmed..Onroute we crossed the actual rail line built by the Ottoman Empire that Lawrence helped destroy and there,to climb on,is the actual train used in the motion picture!!! Also more recently Dennis Villeneuve filmed Dune (part1) Stunning landscape. Large number of desert camps set up in nooks along the way and numerous 4x4 vehicles moving across. Under a main flightpath so planes can be heard in the quiet of the night. Clear sky, extreemly cold!! Camel ride(as always) fun but went in a circle and then a short walk to visitor centre, did not feel like a trek/excursion but more like the donkey rides on the breach one took as a child. would have preferred visit in warmer weather but less busy in winter.Visited December 2022Written January 22, 2023
- KimbriniCanterbury, United Kingdom634 contributionsSome tips to this amazing place!Stunning but cold! (January trip). We did a private tour on our own with a Bedouin young man and his new pick up truck 4WD. It was really brilliant. You’re going to need WARM clothes (tip: buy a Bedouin style coat from a souk. It’s a long open style coat made of fake shearling and very warm! We bought two, one each and they’re still keeping us very warm back in the UK with heating being so expensive!) There are opportunities to stay overnight in the desert, but I’m not sure I’d recommend that, we didn’t stay overnight.. there’s an awful lot of these kind of geode shape, things all round the desert, and to be honest, quite crammed together. If you want a really fancy place to stay in the desert, the captains hotel in Aqaba have a place in wadi rum. They have some rooms to stay there in the desert, which are actually cut into the rock. They have all mod cons too! We were shown those and they looked really fab. We didn’t want to see the “mushroom rock “in the desert, because it didn’t look very interesting! So our guys took us to this amazing place instead, which has the most incredible echo around the mountains.Visited January 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten January 25, 2023
- Brun066Florence, Italy12,262 contributionsUnderstanding the geological history of this place increases its charm.I experienced Wadi Rum on a group trip, staying overnight at “Al Zawaideh Desert Camp”. The experience we had of the desert is therefore the one organized for us by the camp during the afternoon, until sunset. The route covered a good part of the protected area, up to the great rock bridge of Kharaz, and stopped on the way back to watch the sunset. It was thus possible to admire the various aspects of the desert: the ocher colored quartz sand cemented rocks resulting in steeper and sharper cliffs (red sandstone, in the northernmost part of the protected area)); and the rocks of fine white quartz sand, resulting in rounder formations (white sandstone, in the southern section, towards the Saudi border). After our excursion, I was motivated to understand the genesis of this wonderful area, and I therefore learned that the formations that can be admired today were originated, for hundreds of meters in height, by flows of quartz sand dragged towards the north by rivers water originating from present-time Egypt, when the rift of the Red Sea did not yet exist. These flows are deposited on a very ancient, "pre-Cambrian" ground (more than 540 million years ago), and traces of which can sometimes be seen in the granite layers underlying the sandstone. Subsequently these deposits cemented, for tens of millions of years.. After that, these deposits rose up to the heights at which we see them now, due to tectonic thrusts, and erosion shaped and shredded the deposits for a long time, producing the towers and cliffs we see today. By this way, understanding well what I have seen, the initial amazement, only aesthetic, is "nourished" by awareness, and strengthens the enjoyment.Visited August 2022Written February 8, 2023
- Robert P NLos Angeles, California2,414 contributionsAmazing landscape. Used in many movies.Wadi rum is a very large desert and cliff area. There are a lot of glamping locations for those that want to stay and explore the area. A lot of movies were made there from Lawrence of Arabia up to Star Wars. We did a 4x4 adventue and saw a lot in a short amount of time. If you are able to do this. We recommendVisited February 2023Traveled with friendsWritten February 12, 2023
- Xave EdisonSingapore, Singapore760 contributionsA piece of the Red PlanetThe Wadi Rum landscape is out of this world. It looks like a small piece of plateau from Mars had accidentally fallen into Earth millions of years ago, Due to wind and water erosions, each rock formation is unique and some look like an old civilization with inscriptions carved on them. Wadi Rum is massive in size and it is not possible to travel around the area on your own. There are a lot of tour packages in the village which you can choose from and some will include accommodation. Be prepared to walk and climb a lot. The sand dunes here are not high but yet can be quite exhausting to climb up. Um Frouth Rock Arch is one of the most impressive rock formations but climbing up needs a lot of courage due to the steep slopes. Other attractions like Siq Um Al Tawa, and Lawerence Spring also offers very stunning views and experience. To experience the daily Bedouin lifestyle, I opted for a tour package that included a night stay in the Bedouin tent. Due to the low peak season, there are no other tourists in the camp and I enjoyed an exclusive treatment from the host with a delicious bedouin dinner. After which, we sat beside the fireplace for the entire night to get to know each other better. It is an extraordinary experience and I will definitely come back again to explore further.Visited February 2023Written February 16, 2023
- SweerSummerBirmingham, United Kingdom286 contributionsStunning. Pictures do not do Wadi Rum justice. The pictures just don’t give you the sense of scale of Wadi Rum. It is beautiful to look at, lots to explore. You might need to be reasonably fit to climb and even walking up the sand dunes is harder than it looks, but even if you’re not particularly fit, there is so much to see when you’re on a tour with one of the Bedouin who are permitted to drive in Wadi Rum that it’s worth a visit for everyone. We had a tour through our accommodation (Aicha Memories) and had the option of being in the back, or in the cab of the “jeep” (Toyota Hilux) which is more comfortable. Initially we booked a 3 hour tour because once you’ve seen sand & rocks, you’ve seen it? But actually - we were wrong and could have quite happily booked the longer 5 hour tour. It amazes me that even in this place of natural beauty, there is a small amount of rubbish / vandalism - I have no idea what goes through people’s entitled heads to think that this is acceptable? How disrespectful to the Bedouin tribes and to Jordan. This small issue notwithstanding, this is a truly amazing place to visit and can turn a nice trip into holiday of a lifetime.Visited February 2023Traveled with familyWritten February 27, 2023

Wow! I thought Petra was a definite must in Jordan but I have to add Wadi Rum to this list. It was amazing! We did a 6 hour jeep tour and then stayed within the protected area in a local Bedouin camp and it was so spectacular. A must see on your list if you are visiting Jordan, you won't be disappointed. However, I would encourage anyone going to book with a local Bedouin operator and support the locals. Sounds like a no brainer but there are foreign companies operating with in and outside of the protected area. Go with the Bedouin who know this land like no other.

Had a jeep tour around the area. Looked at an arch, the non-stick sand on a particularly steep dune and the well hidden passage to water source in the hills.

The scenery here is absolutely incredible. Stayed 2 nights in one of the many camps Bedouins have built for tourists (not genuine Bedouin camps as such). Trekked up the highest mountain in Jordan, Jabal Umm ad Dami, with views to Saudi Arabia; star gazed at night in perfect conditions; took a jeep tour; & an early morning camel ride to see the sunrise (the ride was one of my highlights of visiting Jordan). Only downside was the flies on food, but it is the desert! Also would not want to visit in the heat of summer. Fully deserves being protected by UNESCO. Can't wait to watch the film Lawrence of Arabia again (Wadi Rum has also been used to represent other planets in Star Wars, the Martian, Dune, etc)!

The vivid colors and weird shapes have resulted in Wadi Rum being called the Valley of the Moon. Wadi Rum has been Heritage Listed since 2011. A "wadi" is a dry watercourse; a "jebel"is a hill. You can hike, or climb , or take a guided tour. The Wadi Rum Protected Area is a great place for a walk in the Jordan's wild desert."

We did a 4x4 tour sand surfing. Camel trek to see the sunrise (the handler were really kind to the camels annd they looked well cared for unlike in some places) and star gazing saw 3 shooting stars😁was worth the overnight stay but is quite a trek from Petra. Wish we had organised the early am hot air balloon trip too

To enter you first need to go to the visitors centre and buy a ticket or get your Jordan Pass stamped. Then you drive to the 'village' if you are staying overnight. Someone from your camp will pick you up there. There are lots of these camps strewn everywhere, be careful what you choose. It gets pretty hot and without air-conditioning, you might be cooking in your little tent. The star gazing is amazing (dondownload one of the apps that help identify constalatuons). Martian tents are overrated. Best way to observe stars is sitting outside. Even the Martian tents obscure visibility. It was interesting to do the jeep drive around, but, no surprise, hot, sandy, dusty. Not really my thing that much. But a good experience for the kids to understand how harsh a desert is. And a good opportunity to do a camel ride. I know that is so so touristy, but it is an experience to try once.

My family and I did a full day tour of Wadi Rum and it is just an incredible place to visit.
We opted for the full day tour with a private guide through an online booking agency. There are just so many sites to see here in this gorgeous landscape!
While there are options to stay the night within Wadi Rum, when we passed the various camps, we were glad we stayed in Aqaba because the camps seemed quite bare-bones.
All the local guides are Bedouin, and know the area very well. It all depends on what kind of tour you book, but a half day tour would not give you the flexibility to go deeper into the landscape. Even after a day driving around, there are just different pockets of rock formations that look completely different than what was in the previous canyon. That was the surprising aspect to the tour here — the variation in topography. The closer you are to the visitor center, the more people on tours there are.
Overall, a magnificent place and well worth a visit.

We had a fantastic time seeing Wadi Rum and its spectacular landscape. We booked a 2 day tour that included Petra, Wadi Rum and Dead Sea and this was easily one of our favourite parts of the trip! Our tour included a "jeep ride through the desert which stopped at a couple of springs and a few formations. We also stayed over night in a Bedouin Style camp and thought everything was worth it. My wife loved it so much that she would consider staying a second night just to enjoy the scenery more. The weather in October was perfect and absolutely worth a visit. We also had a fantastic view of the stars at night and enjoyed a great dinner and breakfast.
You can drive here pretty easily but we went with a tour to get in some naps while we drove between sites. The cost of entry is 35 JOD so you may as well get a Jordan Pass that waives visa fee and allows entrance to here and Petra.

Hello Petal, I realize it has been ten years since you went, but can you share who arranged your tour for you? Did you just go and let the visitor center do it for you? My husband and I are avid desert hikers and like to stay away from crowds whenever possible. Many thanks if you find a moment to respond. Vivian

I went on an organized tour, but the driver was very helpful. I think the concierge would be able to help you. Don't forget to give him a tip. Btw, it's necessary to have a 4WD, the deep sand can be tricky.

Bonjour,

Purtroppo non so rispondere.

Hi, is it safe for a pregnant woman to spend one night in a bedouin camp in Wadi Rum? I mean I'll be 6 months pregnant when I come to Jordan and I'm wondering if it's a good idea or maybe I should stick to ordinary hotels. Thanks!

Hi mbk888,
it is not simple to give you a complete answer, because it depends from different factors.
First of all the Camp: there are some luxury camp more comfortable than an hotel (but expensive) and some others with shared services and spartans bed. Then you must consider the season... I don' know when you want to go but look at the temperatures.
Finally it depend only from you! Only you can decide considering your health status and your attitude. The wadi rum is a desert and by definition you cannot find nothing there...I think that the nearest good hospital is in Aqaba, but it's only one night and the pregnant women are also in the small villages there and all over the world...
I hope to help you, have a great travel in the wondeful Jordan!

Ciao a tutti.

Ciao! A.
