About
This active volcano in Bali, Indonesia, is located at the center of two calderas. Mount Batur, which last erupted in 2000, is located one and a half hours from Ubud by car, and is a popular hiking spot. It’s recommended to make the hour-long climb in the early hours so you can reach the peak in time for sunrise. Just note that visibility may be limited during the rainy season between December and March. Don’t forget to explore Batur’s steaming crater rims and lava fields, or join a tour to enjoy a relaxing soak in a hot spring near Lake Batur. – Tripadvisor

    Clear skies and perfect view
We had our driver take us to Kintamani as part of a day trip out in Bali. We stopped at one of the local cafes along the rim to have a tea and enjoy the views. It did not disappoint. It was the perfect day, clouds in the distance and clear skies above. We could see for miles and had a perfect view of the crater. Definitely a great place to visit, but cross your fingers for the weather.

    Great
Yeah, it was great and the walk up was pretty easy (I am fit). It took about 37 minutes to walk up from the base of the mountain ( which is the second car park area). The views were spectacular. Only issue were a few vendors trying to force you to buy there products like water and cool drinks which got a little Annoying as they were getting upset when you said no. The walk down was a little more tricky as there are plenty of loose rocks and stones so be careful…

    Sunrise Black Lava Jeep Tour
We set off on a 4WD Black Lava Jeep Tour to the lava fields at Mt Batur. Learnt more about the history of the eruptions, see the geologic formations and enjoy the incredible viewpoints. The road was a little bumpy on the way to sunrise point but you get an amazing view & fresh air all the way up. After watching the fantastic sunrise, we are also able to look at the sea of clouds from the mountain top and feel the steam from the volcano. Such an unforgettable memories at Mount Batur.

Hot springs, just don't swim in the waterfalls if you value your health!
It is a long hilly road with lots of bends and turns, but the end destination is worth the drive. You can head there in the wee hours of the morning to trek up the mountain to view the sunrise if that's up your alley, and make a really long day of it if you like. We just went for the hot springs, my partner hiked to the top on a previous visit. The hot springs are lovely at around 37 degrees and overlook the volcano. There are a lot of pools to relax in, some cooler, and there are plenty of food and drink choices to stave off your hunger. If you're Australian, you might not mind the flies that know the exact moment your food comes out. They do provide burning pots to repel them but they are annoying. It is a real maze with lots of stairs so finding your way around can be a challenge, and if your mobility is a problem avoid coming here. The change rooms and toilet facilities are also very average. The toilets often run out of paper so either bring your own or hope for the best, baby wipes are the best option I find. They provide lockers and towels for your use while there. All in all I would say it's worth a visit, and along the way you can visit the coffee farms and waterfalls. A word of caution, if you don't see locals swimming in the waterfalls don't do it, it's not worth the risk of disease, just think of what lies between the source and the waterfall, remember you're in a country that does not have a good sanitation system.

    Good views but very crowded
Easy hike to reach the top (depends on fitness level though). But very crowded and the top can get equally crowded as well. Coming down or going up for that matter, you have the option to get a ride on dirt bikes. They are not cheap though but will get you up the mountain or down in less than 30mins (and the ride is fun)

    Hard hike, views not guaranteed
We paid for a tour (I’ve read you don’t need to do this you can hike alone no fee) We got picked up around 2am and driven 1hr to the mountain, the roads are extremely windy and bumpy so take travel sickness tablets ! When arrived we were given some bits of banana & 1 small bottle of water so make sure you pack snacks & drinks. We were put into group of 5, our guide was very friendly and stayed with us the whole way up and down, and took lots of photos at the top. Sadly I don’t think these guides are paid a good daily wage (we paid around £20pp) so always tip! The hike itself is quite hard, very! Steep and once you climb the side of the mountain it’s small steep uneaten steps, sticks should be recommended. This is not for anyone who isn’t very fit or steady on their feet. View at the top was good, if any clouds you won’t be able to see a thing. It’s VERY cold up there so take a jacket ! Food and drinks very expensive so take your own The way down was equally as bad, extremely loose stones lots of people fell, it’s tough on the knees!

    frozen lavas
With a tourist guide visited the best view mounting Batur. lava volcano since 1963. I took picture in one view, there are the last frozen lavas from the rest of the vulcan. Is it possible use frozen lavas for organic plantation?

The mountain is majestic. We were also amaze by the lava site and the pine forest. Our tour guide explained the history of the place and drove us around in a jeep which was a great experience. You could hit him up on his Instagram @balijeep_adventure10

Arrived at the top in the nick of time for sunrise, which was a beautiful experience. The hike itself isn't too challenging, a few loose sections along the way to watch out for though.

The 1.30am wake-up to start climbing at 3.30am is painful, but very much worth it. It’s approximately a 2 hour climb but best to make it in the dark whilst its coolest. The terrain is road and then rocky/sandy for the rest. The guides will provide flashlights to everyone and that is enough to make it up, feel free to bring your own as well if you prefer. Walking shoes are not a must, but trainers with grip are a minimum. The route down is a lot more sandy and very easy to skid/slip on, that happened multiple times to me.

The views from the top at daybreak and then sunrise do make the trek worth it. This is a popular attraction running every day/night, so if taking a tour expect to be in a group of 10+ with 100 or so climbers ascending that very morning.

The outdoors should always be free to everyone.

This is an short walk, half paved road and half dirt path.
These people are scammers and don’t deserve money from foreigners.
These “guides” only exist to scam people for a an easy walk.

They claim the mountain is “sacred” to them and a guide is required so you don’t “disrespect the local people.”

I don’t think you deserve any respect for trying to scam people, walking up or paying for anything is this area is supporting bad people and funding their tourist scam.

I booked a local guide from my hostel in the area to go with me to go up the volcano - I’m an experienced hiker so in the daytime alone if you’re in a couple or group you probably don’t need a guide, but as a solo traveller someone to go up with in the dark who provided hiking poles, head torch and was affiliated with my hostel in case of emergency seemed sensible. As I’m a decent hiker I managed to avoid the queues of tourists and had some time relatively alone before the big crowds came. If you get up there early enough this makes it worth it to get that quiet sunset time before everyone else. Beware of the scooters, they aren’t careful and can be a danger to the ground. Whilst it was all good going up ahead of the crowds, the tourists all coming down together kick up a lot of dust, some hadn’t been given sticks by their guides and as some were more experienced than others bumped into each other so there were a few falls/skids. I was fine in trainers but if I was to do it again I’d say take hiking boots. If you want a quieter, perhaps more challenging experience in terms of a hike mount agung was recommended. To note a lot of villagers approached giving details saying they were guides and some even said they were with my hostel to try and get me to book with them, so be careful of this. There are no licensed guides but there are some ego do it every day and have affiliations with hostels/businesses and some who are inexperienced but know the way, and you can see the difference in attention given. The view is completely worth the early wake up and recommend the hike.

First of all there is a mafia of young people from the village who are NOT guides but want to benefit from the site by forcing people to pay to be accompanied although the trail is easy and safe. They violently attack and hit tourists who refuse to pay a useless personne to follow them around. Here's the experience you will get by hiking Mt Batur at Sunrise with a "guide": after driving to the parking area down the hill, you will enjoy 30 minutes of walking on asphalt in a line of 500+ more people, while having to dodge motorbikes and cars that go by, honking. Then you will ascend on small paths while breathing full lungs of dust raised by the steps of people in front of you, and having to follow the rythm of your group. Once at the top you'll enjoy the view which is nice and the less nice "breakfast" made of two slices of bread and one egg. In the end you'll descend slowly while getting stuck behind hundreds of people slipping on rocks to conclude the journey. Please boycott this place to stop this madness.
