- KarrempjeVleuten, The Netherlands3,188 contributionsNice to see and to take a breather. The theater is 2000 years old and was rediscovered in 1935. You walk past it, take a photo and continue walking. Maybe if there is theater or music it is more impressive. Great for 10 minutes to sit down and give your legs a rest.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 11, 2024
- gniteIreneToronto, Canada1,025 contributionsAncient theatreOhrid's ancient theatre was built into a hill in the Hellenistic style back in 200 BC. There are 3 areas- the stage, the open space in front of the stage and the rows of seating. This theatre in the old town was only a 5 minute walk from our guesthouse and we had the theatre to ourselves to explore. It's always fun to sit in the seats of an ancient theatre and imagine.....:Visited May 2024Traveled with friendsWritten May 27, 2024
- Naija MAlgiers, Algeria1,121 contributionsWorthy of a quick visitThis ancient amphitheatre is easily accessible, being very close to the centre of the old town. It seemed a little strange to me that there was no entrance fee; that being said, I didn’t fell the need to linger for very long. I think it’s good that apparently it is still used for concerts etc.Visited July 2024Traveled soloWritten July 27, 2024

Ancient theater very well preserved.
It is inside the old settlement and deserves a formal.
You will pass anyway because there are many monuments around.
It is medium in size and hosts events.
There are many Byzantine churches and attractions nearby.

This is a classic ancient Greek theater built into a hillside. It's just after the Upper gate to the old town, from where you can see it so no need to descend down, nor enter it.
Don't expect something grandiose, it's pretty small, but still it has a nice setting overlooking the lake and is very well preserved.

The ancient theatre itself is comparably well preserved, during the evening hour, specials lights make it even more interesting. It can be easily found and is located very near to the modern-day center. However, the recently constructed stage (and especially the roof) seemed to conflict with the ancient part.
By and large, it is a good place to feel the historic atmosphere of how a theatre could have looked like 2000 years ago.

We were here as part of a group tour in September 2022 on a walking tour of the town. The amphitheatre is up the hill from the town and it's great to see that, despite its age, it's still used for concerts etc in the summer. Entry is free if there's nothing on (you can just wander in). Imagine it's very atmospheric seeing a performance here.

The Ancient theatre of Ohrid of the Hellenistic period is located in Ohrid, Macedonia. It was built in 200 BC and is the only Hellenistic-type theatre in the country.
A beautiful 2000 year old amphitheatre in the heart of old city Ohrid, located just below Samuels Fortress and free to enter.
The theatre was constructed between hills to protect it from winds and provide incredible acoustics. It is chosen as one of the main stages where the Ohrid Summer Festival takes place.
The theatre is very well maintained and perched up on a hill with breathtaking views overlooking Ohrid, the lake and the mountains.
World famous stars have performed here, one of the most famous is Jose Carreras (a Spanish operatic tenor who is particularly known for his performances in the operas of Donizetti, Verdi and Puccini), who performed here in 2005 in front of 3.500 people, the maximum capacity.
Be sure to include Samuel's Fortress and Church of Saints Clement and Panteleimon to your walking tour, as they are all 10 minutes from each other, and all have the most wonderful views of Ohrid and full of rich history.

If you are in Ohrid you should take a look at this amazing theatre full of history. Is very well preserved and idk why it has low reviews. A lot of churches close and samuil forttress where you can see ALL OHRID from walls. In 3 4 hours you can visit everything with breaks for a lot of photos.

They are still digging up artifacts from >500 years ago. The spectators on this hill not only had a view of the ring, but also of the lake beyond the village. This hilltop village, lake and ancient monasteries, including Sveti Naum, are definitely worth a 2-day trip.

On the way from Ohrid's historical city center to Samuil's Fortress lies an interesting archaelogical and historical site - the Ancient Theater. It is considered to be built in 200BC, thus being the only Hellenistic-era type of theater in modern-day Macedonia. The Theater was, apart from artistic and public-related purposes also used for fights of gladiators. Unfortunately, it was a place of executions of Christina in the times of the Roman rule, thus it quickly became unpopular in the region, which lead to its decay. Today it is one of the most visited sites in Ohrid. Don't expect too much from it, but make sure not to miss this interesting historical site!

This theater is still in use today. It was uncovered under houses that used to stand here. Seats about 2000.
There are lots of places in the world to see large, impressive, well preserved Roman theaters. This is interesting but just not above average.
Easy to visit as it is near the town center and there is no charge.

On the way to the castle you can stop to see the Ancient Greek Theatre of Ohrid the old Byzantine town.
Is a typical Greek theatre very old and needs money to spend to fix it.Probably UNESCO will do it but must be soon. Before you took the steps you can see a very big head of Macedonian soldier who suppose to be dead .
At the moment is the monument I found free to go in and visit .
