The area
Address
Neighborhood: Ipiranga
Named after the Ipiranga River, this region is home to Independence Park, where it’s said Brazilian Independence was proclaimed. Its gardens and the tree-lined main street offer visitors a gracious view. The neighborhood also hosts assorted museums and has a strong local feel. Ipiranga is a calm area, with a variety of good dining places and its own Municipal Market, which features flowers, meat, vegetables, fruits and some special events. Outside the main subway stations you can experience the busy streets, but you just need to walk a few blocks to get back the residential serenity of the area.

The museum is small when compared to European ones, but not at all bad on a local basis. Reasonably organzed and well maintained, it doesn´t charge for entry. One advantage of its size is that it is fascinating enough for smaller kids, and small enough not to tire them too quickly.

The museum is well-organized and clean with free entrance. The exhibition covers a good range of Brazilian animals that kids and adults will enjoy, the dinosaur fossil was a blast my 7yo loved it! Just hope it was bigger.

Small but so precious. Very well-organized and maintained! Very interesting for adults and children. Free entrance. You cannot enter with bags and purses (there are lockers available). No food or drinks inside. No parking lot - we went on a Sunday morning and could park the car almost in front of the museum. Recommended!

The museum is indeed a bit small, but entry is free, and you can spend the remaining time in the surrounding park, or in the nearby aquarium. Entry is free (at least when I visited, on a Sunday). The collection of fossils is very good, with fossils from the earliest known stages of animal life, with shells and fish, and with remarkable specimens of dinosaur skulls and some complete skeletons (probably reconstructed). There are also skeletons and skulls of extinct mammals, such as the American lion and the cave lion, some giant bear skeleton, and some bones of sea creatures. Some Brazilian biotomes have been set up, with animals ('stuffed') such as the mane wolf and the caipibara. I was pleasantly surprised about the collection.

Although small, the permanent exhibition covers a good range of animal groups. Good display of Brazilian biomes.
