About
One of Brazil’s most iconic landmarks and a symbol of Rio de Janeiro’s beautiful natural surroundings, Sugarloaf Mountain is a must-see attraction. To reach the mountain's peak, ride aboard the world’s third-oldest cable car, or hike through the Brazilian rainforest if you're up for a challenge. Once at the top of the 1300 feet high mountain, you’ll have panoramic views over the whole city and beyond, as well as a range of restaurants and historical exhibits to explore. Private tours of Sugarloaf Mountain give you a great overview of its geology and history, and are also available as part of full-day tours of the city.

Top ways to experience Sugarloaf Mountain Cable Car
The area
Address
Neighborhood: Urca
Urca is one of the oldest areas in Rio. Known for its incredible views of the city, the neighbourhood runs along Guanabara bay, providing visitors with an opportunity to watch the sunset from one of Rio’s greatest natural treasures: Sugarloaf Mountain (Pao de Acucar). It is said that the locals in Urca are “bon vivant,” which is one of the reasons the area attracts people of all styles and ages. Urca is the perfect place to take a stroll and appreciate the area’s beautiful architecture, enjoy a cocktail and some delicious seafood pastries at a bar, or bring a bottle of wine and enjoy it while sitting anywhere along the stone seawall known as the “mureta.”

    Beautiful views
We booked a private tour with Do Brazil Right. Our guide picked us up from the cruise port and we drove to Sugar Loaf Mountain. This was definitely a good way to visit instead of doing it on your own. At Sugar Loaf, our guide had tickets that enabled us to bypass the queue. We went to the top via cable car. The first hill is Morro da Urca. You need to disembark here and walk to the second cable car that will take you to Pao de Acucar. There were lots of tourists since this was Carnival, but we still managed to get some great photos. At the top there are shops and restaurants as well as a small chapel and a helicopter pad if you are interested in taking a tour. I would recommend coming here.

    A must if in Rio
The last time we visited was in 2007. Has it changed yes it has. Increased in cost definitely. We visited the bar there which affords beautiful views but I found the expensive. The cable car gets you to the top efficiently. It made me smile when you have to show your ticket for the return journey how on earth do you think I got up there!!! Nice jungle walk I just felt it was extremely commercialised now compared to my previous visit, I guess this is just life. Great photo opportunities

Amazing views but tickets were expensive
We went in July. We didn't book ahead, there were no queues for tickets so we got straight on a cable car (at midday). Cable car ride took a couple of minutes up. The views are incredible, plenty of great photo opportunities. We felt it was a little expensive for a family of four.

Amazing viewpoint and an interesting bit of geology. The cable cars are nice, looking down on air traffic approaching Santos Dumont is memorable as well. Lot more space to wander around and avoid crowds compared to Corcovado.

    Top of the world
What a great way to get a view of the city. Highly recommend getting there early as the lines get very long quickly and there is a capacity limit on top of the mountain. On top of sugar loaf there’s a lot to do….you can dine at the many restaurants, get a quick mini tattoo, do some light shopping, and even catch a helicopter tour.

    Pretty nice
You can take tickets by cash or by card. It is 185 brasialian real per person ( february 2024) That gives you an access for 5 times. There is a cable car. So you use 1 ticket to go inside, 1 ticket to go 1 cable car up. The area is good and lots of restaurants and foods and gift shops. You can take your time as long as you wish. There was even a dj when we went there. And the other ticket to go one more upper side. This area is a lot smaller. But The scenary is beautiful up there. So other two tickets to go 2 cable car back. It is a must to visit place if you are in Rio. But basically, if you see the whole city from Crist statue side, I do not know if you wish to see the city from the other side again. All up to you people.

    Amazing views
We went to Sugarloaf on a tour from our cruise ship. Our group had the express tickets so we didn't have to wait in long lines...accessing the cable cars was fairly easy. The general lines weren't long when we arrived (about 9:30 am) but they had grown by the time we left. The cable car rides (2 up and 2 down) were fairly quick and smooth. The views are great. The views from the top of Sugarloaf are amazing in all directions. We were fortunate to have a clear day (with a nice breeze). There are some shops (over priced) and food/beverage outlets at the top. We recommend this attraction.......the express tickets are highly recommended.

    Fabulous View!!!!!Breathtaking.
We got fast pass tickets at the Sugarloaf Mountain and it was wonderful. We waited in a very short line then went through a lounge where we where there was no one and we went to the private clean bathroom and we were given a complimentary water then taken to the front for the next cable car. The cable car was quick but note there are no chairs but you stand and look at the beautiful view. There is a halfway point with food, drink, souvenir stores and great views. Then you can go up to the top on another quick cable car ride where there are more food, drink and stores and amazing views. Our day was clear so it was wonderful. I would change your day before doing it on a hazy foggy day.

    Great Rio experience
Sugarloaf Mountain is directly in front of the Christ the Redeemer statue. It is apparently named after the shape of sugar imported by Portuguese in conical shaped cones. Access to the mountain is in two steps (mountain A to Mountain B) on extremely new cable cars that hold 65 passengers each. There are food venues, souvenir shops, and toilets on both mountains. This is a once in a lifetime experience. GO! This venue is not as crowded as Christ the Redeemer.
Hi Eaton, how are you? We're very happy to hear about your trip and that you enjoyed our shopping areas, as well as the beautiful view of Rio de Janeiro. We want to thank you for your feedback and review, and we hope to see you again soon! Kind regards!

    A must go
This is a must go: high atop the Sugarloaf (Pão de Açúcar), which is the small hill on the western side of the ocean/bay mouth. The mouth is nearly a mile wide mouth, the Atlantic Ocean to the south and the Guanabara Bay to the north. To the west, under the Cristo Redentor / Christ the Redeemer’s feet, is the city of Rio. SDU airport, light colored buildings, shanty towns on the dark green hills, white beaches, little islands – the Bay is dotted by more than 130 islands. All are surrounded by gleaming waters, making it picturesquely enchanting. The cable car has two stops: the first one is at Morro da Urca (elevation 722′ or 220m), and the second/last stop is at the summit, Sugarloaf mountain (not sure mountain is fitting here), with 1,299′ (396m) elevation. The cable car operation opened in 1912. The four gondolas we were in, have no a/c. The cafes at both stops have great views as well. We left our hotel at 8:30, and again, seeing dressed up (or early dressed) crowds – the carnival is raging on. Many roads were closed. Heavy traffic jam made the drive an hour long ordeal. We finally arrived at Praça General Tibúrcio / General Tibúrcio Square, where the entrance to the cablecar is at. There wasn’t any lines, both to the gondola and ticket window. But ticket pick up was a long affair, when they demanded our ID. For Pete’s sake, why selling online but not issuing digital ticket? Secondly, on the ticket site there wasn’t any warning that ID is needed for ticket pick up. Once the physical tickets in hand, we got up quickly.

Ticket was pre-booked by our tour guide, so no queuing. The view was spectacular on the way up and when we got to the first stage. Onto the top and
we took over a restaurant where tapas and wine flowed until it went dark. The view was just as stunning.

While this “skip the line” doesn’t outline what to do, the staff at the venue were simply amazing! I showed them the voucher, they quickly helped me convert it to a ticket and off I went!
There are still sooo many people but this was a game changer when you are tight on time.

The cable car system is similar to any cable car you take in any part of the world to higher ground . I find the cable car ticket super expensive for 2 cable car rides of a short 3 minute duration . Hence, you are riding the cable car 4 times - 2 times up and down . The ride is okay if it is not too hot nor crowded . But during peak time , be prepared to be stuck up there.

Yes the views are great but the views are similar as when you take a plane landing and taking of from the airport .

In short, if it is in your bucket list, put it in and visit it . Recommend d that you visit Christ the redeemer first followed by sugar loaf mountain . Nice insberg though .

Just buy your ticket at the cable car as there is no discount here, and you need to actually print out the voucher. It’s a pita to get the hotel to print it for you. You would think showing the voucher on your phone would work, but no. Beautiful views of Rio a must see but don’t buy ticket from here.

Not cheap at $35/person but considering the means by which you travel on the cable car, you want to make sure it's really safe, and it is a smooth and quick ride to the top of both peaks. Having the two peaks gives you different views. Both stops have nice restaurants and shopping. Not as crowded as Christ Redentor. Also a short bus ride from Copacaba. Check their website before you go, there is a webcam to check if the view is obscured.

They do not make it very clear where to go with your VIP fast pass. It was handy to be in front of everyone. However, you have to print the voucher ahead of time and then get your tickets there which is just almost the same as standing in the regular long line. It was really cool to go all the way to the top of Sugarloaf. But the people are not very courteous and cut in front of you and walk in front of you and don’t care if they push you, or cut you off.

We went early in the morning and it was beautiful. We were on the second cable car up and the views were great. We didn't pre-buy tickets, which I think helped us first thing because the line to buy tickets was quicker than the one to get tickets that were pre-purchased. This would only be true first thing because by the time we left (10ish am) the line to buy tickets was super long. It wasn't my favorite part of our trip, but was nice!

Sugarloaf Mountain is so beautiful. I definitely enjoyed seeing Rio from the top of Sugarloaf Mountain. This mountain is absolutely interesting of how things were made on top and also crazy that there are also monkeys on top of it! Definitely recommend seeing it.
