Truly a spectacular example of Brazilian Baroque style. The outside is nice but you can't quite believe what is on the inside. The gold - the ceilings - the tiles from Portugal - the elaborate carvings. Really impressive and there's nothing else that comes close....More

Beware of “tour guides” that start helping you out, giving you a tour, they look official wearing t-shirts and all. They’ll give you a full tour and then ask you for money.

Mysterious, full of old-fashioned church equipment, with statues of the Passion of Jesus inside. The entrance was 5 BRL and for that price we got amost private tour when we could see thr church, sacristy, choir and catacombs.

I've never seen anything quite like this church. Yes, the interior is absolutely covered in gold unlike anything I've ever seen. But what I find remarkable is the way in which the slaves who were made to create this place found creative ways to express...More

This jewel of the Brazilian baroque is especially precious for its lush interior decor. All the interior surfaces - walls, columns, ceilings, chapels - are lined with intricate carvings and gildings, with finials, friezes, arches, volutes and countless figures of angels and birds scattered at...More

Two of the most typical artistic expressions of Portugal are 'Gilded woodcarving' (Talha dourada) and 'Glazed ceramic tilework' (Azulejos). Both can be found in abundance in the 'Sâo Francisco Church and Convent' in the former capital of Portuguese Brazil, in Salvador. There is an entrance...More

We visited this as part of a cruise ship tour so really did not have enough time to view in detail all that there is to see. The church is highly decorated with carved wood and coated with gold leaf reminiscent of the churches in...More
