I went to mass at 18:30 on tuesday. I had been told they sing to the rhythm of drums. The experience starts slowly, but it gets better and better. It is the real thing, with locals attending, and sharing prayers and bread. Unique experience.

The Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosario dos Pretos is one of 365 churches in Salvador. Part of the history of the period of slavery is a must for tourists. There are signs (in English) explaining its history. I recommend attending Mass.

By day I toured it quietly and returned for a musical concert after 6pm with local musicians. The interior of the church is striking.

I was fortunate to be on Salvador on a Sunday and attend the church service. I would encourage one and all to understand the history of this remarkable church and witness the fusion of religion and African music/custom in the service .
