Beautiful, breathtaking memorial. Not to be missed. The artwork is gorgeous, but beyond that, this is an important landmark, symbolic of historically significant happenings, which came with honorable sacrifices made by US Marines during WWII worthy of remembrance.

While this inspiring memorial depicts the famous flag-raising at Iwo Jima, it honors fallen Marines from all conflicts since 1775. It's located adjacent to Arlington National Cemetery, and it's about a 15-minute walk from either the Welcome Center or Arlington House.

Powerful memorial to our Marines. Easy to find and park. No crowds. There were some Marines changing out the flag when we arrived because the flag was worn. Great to see them taking care of this beautiful memorial.

During the summer months, the US Marine Corps Drum and Bugle Corps, the Honor Guard, and the Silent Drill team perform an evening tattoo on Tuesdays at 7pm. Bring a blanket and enjoy the show!

More beautiful in person than in pictures. I was taken back by the size and how the memorial stands out against the sky. I love the real flag waving at the top. Brings back the history of that moment.

When we visited Arlington Memorial for the day, we didn't get anywhere near this place, because it's accessed by a separate entrance. However, it's a memorial to the men who captured Iwo Jima from the Japanese Army in WW2, after capturing the Philippines and before the landing at Okinawa. The sculpture is based on the award winning photo taken by a war correspondent as marines captured Mount Suribachi at one end of the island during a famous and bloody battle.

We took guided evening tour and this was our final stop of the evening. At night the place is lit by floodlights which adds to the atmosphere. Anyone interested in WW2 should pay their respects here.

“I VISITED THIS PLACE”…
… because I simply love everything about this place- as I described above. When opening my excursion to the area, the three “attractions” at the top of my list were this, the Lincoln Memorial and the National Gallery of Art.

All the memorials of the D.C. area are fantastic, so it’s hard to say which is the best – they are all so incredible and impressive. But this one ranks right up there at the top of the list.

I took Mrs. Place directly here on a Sunday morning, after arrival at DCA airport at 0600am. The peace and solitude and beauty all add to the absolute splendor of the place and the so so larger than life precision exacting realistic statues. We spent almost an hour admiring the structure and reading and listening about everything that we could- about the sculpture, the photographer, the sculptor, the Battle of Iwo Jima, World War II and the Marines.

We studied and analyzed the engraved names and years of so of the battles and “operations” in which the Marines served. We had no idea how many confrontations and conflagrations there had been.

And then, I returned midweek in the evening to see the United States Marines Marching Band and Honor Guards at a dusk and twilight concert, performance and matching drill and precision demonstration. Hundreds of others attended, and it was fantastic- musical, patriotic, exciting, impressive visually: old time “proud of ourselves and of our accomplishments” America- l loved it. Please see and enjoy my many “helpful” photos.

TIPS
If you’ve read this far and still haven’t figured it out, I’ll write this explicitly: for sure absolutely go and visit this place, but if you drive, use Waze or Google maps. And if you can’t find a place to park in their lot of up to ke20 cars, go up to Fort Myers Boulevard.

… oh, and the adjacent Netherlands Carillon: is enough to admire it from a distance- no need to walk there (see my separate review of the attraction.

…BUT if you want to see that amazing view of the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument and Capitol all lined up in a row across the Potomac River, that is a few paces before the few steps to the carillon.

We've all seen photos of the monument in the light of day; seeing the monument at night, is an entirely different perspective.

The detail of every view and "piece of the sculpture" is featured in the greatest detail and contrasted against the night sky giving way to an eerie silence as the tour crowd hushes.
