After several visits to Alexandria and walks through the church yard, was finally fortunate enough to stop by for a tour of this historic and active church. Margot met me at the door and welcomed me in for a look around or a guided tour. I accepted the tour, but others who stopped in "for a look" were not pressured into a lengthier commitment. The history of the congregation and structure kicked off the tour, followed by pointing out some specific features— many dating from Christ Church's Church-of-England roots and possessing Georgian era styling. Washington's pew was of particular interest, as he was a founding member of the congregation. A $5 donation is appreciated, pictures are welcomed, and a stop at the gift shop was an added delight. The tour was short— but lengthier for my questions. The members of the congregation who I encountered were kind and happy to share their parish with visitors.

My colleague and I were in town and we assumed we could stop by the church. They do have specific tours time that you should check out. However, we got lucky that one of the docents was there and let us listen and participate on the George Washington pew part of the tour. It is really neat history and information. We want to thank her (Janet?) for allowing us to learn. I plan to be back!

The church and graveyard offer a rare look at colonial and Civil War times. There is a mass grave of Confederate soldiers near the front gate, but wander to the back entrance of the church and get a tour. George Washington and Robert E. Lee were both parishioners. It's a cool, quiet setting.

We went here for service on New Year’s Day 2023. We were interested in the history of the church and thought a service would be a nice way to visit. After the service we were looking around a bit and a parishioner took the time to point out George Washington’s pew and Robert E Lee’s too. He and another parishioner spent a generous amount of time telling us about the interesting parts of the church—old and new—and share some church history. Amazing experience.

The church is simple but lovely. A docent invited us to sit in George Washington's pew and provided an interesting description of the church, its history, and the many dignitaries who have visited here. We throughly enjoyed this experience.

You can sit in George Washington's pew! You can sit in his actual pew! We got a brief history from a docent and enjoyed this experience!

A cool oasis from the heat-with a public restroom. I’ve walked through several times and the church has always been in use or closed.

We walked through the cemetery and as we entered the church, we were greeted by Sue, a docent who was so pleasant and knowledgeable. She walked us over to the pew box George Washington sat in and proceeded to tell us the history of the beautiful church and the many notable people who belonged to the church in the past, the dignitaries who have visited the church, and it's current status. It was so interesting and such a lovely building to be sitting in. Amazing how the original structure has been preserved and still services the community. So glad we stopped by.

A woman was present to tell the history of this church and the importance of its role. There were quite a few people coming in/out admiring the architecture of the church

Built close to 250 years ago and the building of the church was supervised by John Carlye. At the alter, there are hand-lettered wooden tablets containing the Apostles’ Creed, Ten Commandments and Lord’s Prayer are original and never have been retouched.
We had the opportunity to engage in a tour of the church and sit in George Washington's family box pew. In his box pew, there are placards adhered to the pew marking where Franklin D Roosevelt, Eleanor Roosevelt and Prime Minister Winston Churchill sat in 1942 for National Day of Prayer. Other American Presidents have attended service around Washington's birthday.
Robert E Lee and Wife Mary Custis Lee attended this church and had a box pew as well. Mary Custis Lee donated $10,000 to the church. During the Civil War, the church had a reputation as Washington's church. Therefore, the church was utilized as a church during the war and not destroyed like other buildings.
Donation box available to give a token of your appreciation/gratitude. Street parking surrounding church or walking distance from pay parking lots.
