I parked in a parkade in downtown Austin to check out the famous Congress Avenue. Lots of shops and restaurants, then I noticed the State Capitol, so I made a direct line for that instead of walking along Congress. When returning to my vehicle, I noticed that for the amount of time I was parked, it was very expensive!

Just meander along Congress Avenue. It’s a happening place. We were there during the Texas Book Festival and there were many food trucks and vendors, too. Sadly there are a lot of homeless people along the street.

We stayed at the Royal Sonesta at 701 Congress, and were very centrally located for walking, bars, and restaurants. When our feet were too tired to go far, we opted several times to eat at the wonderful Caroline's restaurant, just across the street from our hotel, and always had a great meal there, be it breakfast or dinner. Just a couple of doors down from there, we discovered The Hideout coffee shop, and had an excellent well priced breakfast there more than once. The bacon, egg, and cheese croissant was divine, and I enjoyed one of the best lattes I've ever had.

Congress Avenue is to Austin, Texas, what Broadway or Honky Tonk Highway is to Nashville, Tennessee. Stretching from First to 11th Street, south of Austin's downtown area, the Congress Avenue neighborhood--or SoCo to the locals--is home to some of the city's most notable hotels, shops, boutiques, art galleries, restaurants, bars and music venues. It is the epicenter of nightlife, a walkable and trendy and touristy thoroughfare that is six lanes wide and lined with trees. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. Get a cup of coffee and a breakfast taco at Jo's Coffee. Have brunch at Cafe No Se or a steak dinner at Marie Day in the South Congress Hotel. Choose a hand-made burger from beef to chicken to ahi tuna or vegan at Hopdoddy Burger Bar. Satisfy your sweet tooth at Big Top Candy Shop. Have a slice of pizza at Home Slice Pizza or an ice cream cone at Amy's Ice Creams. Choose a Cuban specialty at Habana SoCo, sample the Mediterranean cuisine at Aba or enjoy coastal oysters and champagne at Perla's. Shoppers have many options, too. Browse or buy at Music Lane, Kendra Scott, Allens Boots, Maya Star, Prima Dora, Parts & Labour, Manfraie's Hats or Monkey See Monkey Do. At night, listen to live music at the Continental Club or live soul and R&B at C-Boy's Heart and Soul or live Americana and blues at Guero's Taco Bar or take the stage for nightly karaoke at Ego's. There is so much to see and do. Never a dull moment on Congress Avenue in Austin.

Nice street in downtown Austin.
You can feel the atmosphere when walking around.
Alot of places to stop for food and drinks. And there also are alot of history in the streets that are worth checking out.

We only spent time on the section north of the bridge. There is a lot of interesting architecture, especially the buildings constructed of the local limestone.

Some interesting statues.

Lots a dining and shopping opportunities.

Drove down the street after walking the hike and bike trail with my dog, day before Christmas. Very quiet. Most of the stores and restaurants were closed. Hard to tell if they were just closed because of the holiday season or Covid; are closed permanently. Pre-Covid, a nice street to stroll down, particularly headed towards the water.

Missed the Bats as there was a Pride event going on over the bridge, so did not get to see the Bats under congress bridge, but for an attraction it is worth visiting the bridge on your trip and if at the right time catch a glimpse of the Bats.

I walked from Texas State Capitol building all the way down to the Fairmont hotel and I don’t really see anything different from this street and any other state in America!
In fact there really isn’t any particular stores or eating areas that were exciting to me.
The most striking thing was there’s a lot of people that look like they’re strung out on heroin and talking to themselves. Homeless people are everywhere. I’m here at a meeting by myself and I definitely wouldn’t suggest walking by yourself at night.
