Neighborhood: Western Kyoto
Western Kyoto is home to some of the city's best eccentricities. Kyoto's Saga-Toriimoto Preserved Street takes visitors back in time to the Meiji Period, where old homes have been transformed into tea houses and eateries. Pleasure boats drift down the riverbank, under wooden bridges that beckon nature lovers to hiking trails and botanical walks. The area's famously tall bamboo groves, monkey park, and impressive vistas during the Hanami cherry blossom viewing season mean that it is busiest in warmer months, though also gorgeous in the fall, when the mountains and hills along the banks turn multi-colored. Historic and engaging, even the rail cars in Western Kyoto seek to exemplify its traditional nature and scenic beauty. Many people, including natives, come to visit the 1,200 rakan statues at the Otagi Nenbutsuji Temple, which is still in use as a religious site.

Honestly I was really disappointed in the bamboo forest. It’s honestly no different than a bamboo forest at a local zoo. The only issue here is it’s overrun by instagramers and wanna be influencers. I saw a real lack of respect for the place by all the travelers. People crossing over the do not enter signs. The saving grace is the bridge and river by the mountains are beautiful. Go to visit the neighborhood but skip the bamboo forest if you can. Visiting Fushimi Imari is much more worth you time.

Beautiful place. We went early in the morning (around 6am at sunrise) and it was so quiet and quaint. I enjoyed watching the sunrise as I walked across the river to the bamboo forest.

Btw, the famous part of the bamboo forest is only about 10m or so, so if you want to get a photo without anyone, go early because when I left around 6:30am, there were already more people walking in.

It was quite cold in the morning too, especially by the river.

Highly recommended day trip when visiting Kyoto. Explore the bamboo grove, natural landscape (mountains, river, forest) and many ancient temples. The area is a popular destination for Japanese and tourist alike so get there early. Highly recommend the monkey park on the other side of the bridge. Many great places to shop for gifts to bring home. Easy to get there on the JR from Kyoto station.

We had gotten up early to arrive by 6:30 in the morning, and there were only a few people there. It made the walk mesmerizing, almost haunted. Definitely worth seeing without the crowds, even if the walk itself is quite short. If it had been flooded woth people, I would not have enjoyed this at all.

Please note that if you do come at around this time, everything else in the area will be closed, so take that into account to avoid disappointment!

A must if you’re in Kyoto. Go as early as you can! Amazing pictures provided you don’t encounter too much people. Our teens also enjoyed it a lot!

The grove itself is short but beautiful regardless. You can spend all day doing a walk from the monkey park to the Togetsukyo bridge to the bamboo grove then to the Tenryu-ji temple and get out through a shopping street. Stop by an Instagram popular coffee shop on the way to the grove from the bridge

This is a tranquil little pocket of beauty in Arashiyama. While not very big, the walk is beautiful and weirdly quiet. Go very early in the morning if you want to take pictures alone, because the TikTokers and Influencers will take over the pathway.

It is a beautiful place, but I highly recommend going to the river, climbing up the hill as there was lookout near by.

The nearest train station is saga arashiyama then follow by a 1.6km walk to arashiyama/tenruyji temple. Along the way to arashiyama, there lot of foods and shopping options available and there even rickshaw puller and kimono rental around the area.

The bamboo forest is a unique and beautiful place. BUT, if I am to be honest, that is probably about it for me. Take some obligatory photos and there is not much else for me beyond that.
