About
One of Kyoto's most famous attractions, this temple was originally built in 1397 as a residence for shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. The structure was completely covered in gold leaf, earning it the name Golden Pavilion.

Neighborhood: Northern Kyoto
Hot springs and historic temples characterize the leafy landscapes of Northern Kyoto. Acres of tranquil residential streets are interrupted by some of Kyoto's most gorgeous architectural gems, including the majestic Golden Pavilion of Kinkakuji, the serene artistry of the Ryoanji Temple rock gardens, and the bold red paint across the structures of Enryakuji Temple. Once a religious core of the city, the district now boasts some of its most remote and peaceful hot springs, as well as a few of its best family-run mom-and-pop restaurants. A blend of extremely local at its outskirts, and highly peopled at its tourist centers, Northern Kyoto nonetheless retains a halcyon air in harmony with nature.

I went here with my family in 2016 and loved the site. It was a little too crowded when we went but it was still a really cool place to go and I'd love to go again.

I have been to Kyoto twice and still I alwasy come to visit this place!
It is magic with just every kind of season, the entry price is not that expensive and is easy to reach with pubblic transportations.

The visit will also not take that long... it all depends from how many pictures you will take (:

Kinkakuji is perhaps the most well-known temple in Japan. The pavilion itself is a three-story structure, the top two floors of which are entirely covered in gold leaf and shimmers in front of a pond. Visitors are not allowed to enter the actual building, but can view the pavillion from various angles as they follow the path around from the entrance. I recommend to get there early. We took bus 12 and arrived just before opening at 9am. Due to Covid, there were less visitors so there were plenty of photo opportunities without the crowds. With such a calm, sunny day, the reflection on the water was spectacular. This was a highlight for our trip and a must to see when in Kyoto.

I went here in autumn 2021, got here by using train and bus. You can follow the direction in googlemaps. The photo spot was bustling with tourists so you have to choose your time and timing if you want to take pictures. They also sell souvenirs and ice cream here. This place is a must-go if you happen to be in Kyoto. I think the best time to visit this place is either in autumn or winter.

I was looking forward to visiting the Kinkakuji Temple. After all, it's all over when you look at photos of Kyoto. A golden temple is truly unique. It did not disappoint. I was here on a rainy day and during State of Emergency so there was hardly anyone here. There is a small entrance fee. After entering, there is a path that goes around to the temple and beyond. The temple is beautiful especially with the pond. I've never seen anything like it. After a visit to the temple my wife and I stopped in one place for traditional green tea, it was yummy. The Kinkakuji Temple is a must when in Kyoto.

Don’t get me wrong this attraction was cool and we had a blast seeing it. Honestly for me though it’s a little tacky with the gift shops surrounding it on the little walk way. Loved the pavilion and gardens though for sure.

Getting around Kyoto can be daunting, but actually public transport is easy, and people are ready to help. this is easy enough to find. the entrance fee is minimal, and it's a real cultural highlight that reminds you Japan is so different, so amazing and it's a treat to visit here!

The Golden Temple of Japan is probably the most crowded place in my trip yet it is worth the visit for the sheer shiny and beautiful temple.
Just be patient to get a clean shot and look at it.
