One of Kyoto's most famous attractions, this temple was originally built in 1397 as a residence for shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. The structure was completely covered in gold leaf, earning it the name Golden Pavilion.

The Golden Pavilion (Rokuon-ji Temple) can be very crowded when there are many tourist buses there. It was like a procession, moving with a crowd, stopping at the photo stops, then moving on with the flow to the next stop. It is a very beautiful...More

We have been privileged to visit Kinkakuji a number of times over the last 20 years and whilst the building remains as beautiful as ever and the view of the temple across the lake and manicured trees a true classic of Japan, we have been...More

We were really lucky we arrived 5 minutes before the gate closed. So we were able to enjoy the tempel in a beautyful sunset! A great spot. And definetely worth a visit!

Great experience, even though it's awash with people. Not to be missed, try and go really early or position your camera so it seems you were the only one there ;-)

We got back from Japan last week. Seeing the Golden Temple was high on our list. But if we had known how incredibly crowded this place would be, we would not have gone. Yes it is pretty, but you see it from a distance, wait...More

This site is quite beautiful and unusual for it’s golden exterior. You can’t go into it, but the outside is so beautiful, you don’t feel cheated. The gardens are also a part of the experience to be enjoyed. Even though crowded, it was easy to...More

Kinkakuji is beautiful but you can only enjoy it if you know the story behind it. It was burnt to the ground 50 years ago. Recommend you tour with KSK-Tours to learn the whole story.

Covered in gold leaf and reflected in it's surrounding water, it is easy to see why this temple is popular with Japanese and tourists alike. It is another of Kyoto's UNESCO World Heritage sites, and a walk through it's beautiful gardens is also rewarding.

The best pictures are at the front to the left. Early morning or before they close are likely less busy. I went midday and it was hard to even get a picture. Very beautiful temple though.

Even the temple is made out of wood, its gold plated and looks incredible. If you're lucky to visit on a sunny day, all the colors will be magnificent
