Neighborhood: Western Kyoto
Western Kyoto is home to some of the city's best eccentricities. Kyoto's Saga-Toriimoto Preserved Street takes visitors back in time to the Meiji Period, where old homes have been transformed into tea houses and eateries. Pleasure boats drift down the riverbank, under wooden bridges that beckon nature lovers to hiking trails and botanical walks. The area's famously tall bamboo groves, monkey park, and impressive vistas during the Hanami cherry blossom viewing season mean that it is busiest in warmer months, though also gorgeous in the fall, when the mountains and hills along the banks turn multi-colored. Historic and engaging, even the rail cars in Western Kyoto seek to exemplify its traditional nature and scenic beauty. Many people, including natives, come to visit the 1,200 rakan statues at the Otagi Nenbutsuji Temple, which is still in use as a religious site.

    Meh
If you are Canadian and have ever seen Elora Gorge (Ontario) or Johnson Canyon (Alberta) you can give this a miss. It is basically a train that takes you along a trail above the river. Nice enough, but I kept on waiting for something else. Was a bit of a waste of an afternoon.

Enjoyable way to wrap Arashiyama bamboo forest walk
We bought tickets 5 minutes before departure. Very well organised, we even got two reserved seats at such short notice in what was a pretty full but still comfortable train. Beyond what other positive reviewers have already said, I would add: * If you're coming from Arashiyama Bamboo forest, walk on to the Torokko-Arashiyama train station. * The signing conductor added extra entertainment. * We considered taking the boat back, but I'm glad we didn't. From the train we could see some of the stretches of river looked quite rocky. It looked more like whitewater rafting than a gentle boat ride. * Keep your ticket - you need to drop it in a box upon alighting.

A reasonable trip, but a long day
We did the romantic train, horse carriage and boat loop with the walk through the bamboo forest. While the whole thing was pleasant enough (we had a 32 degree sunny day) it was a little underwhelming. The booking was a little annoying - couldn’t prebook so had to line up, but easy enough once we were there. The train journey was nice. The horse carriage ride was strange, and a little expensive - the one horse struggled and the carriage driver seemed a little inexperienced. The boat ride was nice, but just a bit too long at over 2 hours (especially for our young children 5 + 8). The scenery was nice, though not a lot of variety. And there was virtually no English (which is fine). The bamboo forest was a pretty nice walk in the shade back towards the train station.

    Explore Japan autumn
Magnificent♪Marvelous! The views from the Sagano romantic train. The train goes along Hozu River and Hozu Valley The autumn leaves are beautiful in November, and you will be amazed by the maple tunnel and the magnificent nature of the Hozu River. It takes about 20minutes from Saga Station to Kameoka.I recommend the ride side seat towards Kameoka.

    Good, but not outstanding
This is a cute little tourist train with a short ride along a scenic river canyon. I recommend making reservations in advance, travelling from Kameoka to Arashiyama. Take the JR train to Umahori and make a 10 minute walk to the other nearby station that the romantic train uses. I got off the train at Arashiyama, the next to the last station. Turn left when exiting the station and walk through the bamboo forest and end up in the town where you can catch the Randen Electric Railway onwards. On the day of travel you should log into your reservation to access your QR code. Either get it printed out at your hotel or screenshot it. You'll need that to exit at the end of your ride. Lots of people were struggling to get internet access as we were rushed out . That was a poor ending to an otherwise fun little ride.

    Scenery Train NOT Romantic Train
Although this is sold as a romantic train it is not but a Scenery train. The day started well and we got on board. If you are booking this pls choose the right hand side of the train as you see the most from this side. We sat on the left and soon realised most of the views were on the right side. There was a spare seat to out right that some standing couples decided to fill and remain standing. I had to tell them to sit down. Most of the right hand side stood up leaving the left hand side people unable to see much. The staff on the train must insist that people remain seated to make it fair for all. We did this at the end of March i would suggest this will be best in the summer. Start in Saga/Arashiyama and its about 25 minutes worth to the end Kameoka.

This half-hour train journey is recommended for anyone who loves sitting on a hard wooden seat with a bunch of other tourists, gazing at a (fine, rushing) river passing by, while an animated conductor rattles off explanations in Japanese and even sings a little song, which people enthusiastically applaud.

Enjoy the ride.

The very dissagreeable train conductor did not let us on board the last train of the day, because he claimed the train to bee sold out , even though there were a number of free seats. Peace of crap service !

This tourist attraction is a great big nothing burger!! It is indeed a testment to the power of marketing! While it is great to see old train gear still being put to use there was not much to see on the train ride itself. Most of the maples that were changing color wher planted next to the track.

Not worth the time or ticket cost. Total tourist trap.

1. The sights were just mediocre and the light installations quite tacky.

2. The whole time they were taking photos of passengers and trying to sell them. Having the repeated flash in my eyes totally ruined the experience.

3. Weird policy about seats. Seats were sold out for our train so we bought standing tickets (which cost the same). When we got on the train there were empty seats everywhere, but we were not allowed to sit in them when we tried. Those seats then remained empty for the entire 25 mins train ride.

トロッコ嵐山でスタフは超失礼だった。私と彼女と一緒に日本語で問題を教えたら1人の男性は質問を答えたくなった。凄くびっくりした! もう一回絶対に行かない!

Staff extremely rude and not very helpful. Very impatient people to deal with - HIGHLY DONT RECOMMEND!!

Find another place to get on!!

Tourist trap. The train doesn't stop in Kameoka, but way earlier at Umahori. Castle ruins and temples are approx. at 30/45 min walking distance from the drop off train station. Please carefully read the info before coming. Also on the train the view is very easy to miss, if you're not seated in the correct direction. A lot of passengers just stand up to take pictures.
