Neighborhood: Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.

Just like its counterpart in Fukuoka Hakata Canal City (Ramen stadium), located on the 10th storey on JR Kyoto Station, there is an indoor street with about 10+ ramen restaurants located side-by-side which you can slowly walk and choose before deciding which to dine.
It was weekend when we arrived here (after visiting the Great Staircase outside) and near to noon time, the crowd was getting heavier and honestly, we were spoiled with choices which to dine as each seemed so nice and yummy. Although they are all selling ramen, I trust each is unique and different, especially the soupbases.
After walking for a good 15mins, we chose one (I will review next time separately) and the ramen was good! Soup was flavourful and the ramen was well cooked and springy. Do note that all the restaurants have vending machines which you will need to buy a ticket before entering the restaurant (which you will pass the tickets to the staff). No worries, the vending machines are multi-languages and so language is no barrier.
After we finished our meal, the place outside was full of crowd and fortunately we came by early and left to explore other parts of the city!

The title said it all. I read the reviews before coming and ran by an article that said this place was the best one. Forgot what it was called exactly but it had a menu full of garlic ramen. I usually love garlic so I didn't mind. But this was just too much. I couldn't even stomach through a quarter of it. And I NEVER do that. This was the first where I just couldn't even at least finish half a meal. I felt bad but for this I still think New York had the best ramen I've ever had.
I might be too scarred to try the other places now. Not sure maybe will give it a go but most likely won't.

The ramen was mediocre - very flat soup base full of MSG and tough bamboo shoots. I live in Europe and even those fake ramen joints have much authentic shoyu ramen.
I came with a rather large family group of 9 adults and one toddler and I can understand ramen joints are rather small businesses. I finished my bowl first so I offered to walk out and waited outside with the toddler. As soon as I did it the manager came up to me asking me to tell my father to do the same- the truth is he is rather old and visually disabled, and literally he had just finished his last bite!
My sister tried to be accommodating with her toddler on baby sling and she even took the baby out when he hinted making a bit of noise- as soon as she walked out the manager poked me on my shoulder rather rudely and posted “do not walk around in the shop” on his google translate. We felt like our group was being picked up simply because of our group size.
There are so many ramen joints in this tiny place so no point to ruin your holiday with a mediocre ramen and a rude manager

We came here twice because we love ramen and there are so many options to choose from. It's a little hard to find this place the first time since Kyoto Station is huge. Just look for Isetan Department store and they have an elevator that can take you straight to 10th floor to this place. We had lunch at 2pm and dinner the next day at 6pm and the wait times weren't bad at all. Some restaurants have longer lines outside because the seating area is smaller, but not necessary mean they are more popular.
You buy all your noodles through vending machines at the door and hand the tickets to the waiter/waitress. Easy, no Japanese is needed!
Price is very reasonable and taste is good. Would highly recommend to any ramen loving visitors!

I went to this place with my family and a friend who is Muslim. It’s located in the same building as the train station and has many stores with ramen from different regions in Japan. Most shops have huge lines and you have to order on a machine. One line is to order on the machine and one line is to enter the shop. The machines are a little hard to operate if you have not used one before, I was pretty confused and the long line behind me made me feel bad for taking a while.
There’s one single shop that’s supposed to be Kyoto Ramen that is chicken based. So we decided to go try that one so my Muslim friend can also try the ramen. However turned out in the stock they also add pork bones. As a result my friend could only eat fried rice. The ramen my family tried is ok, nothing too impressive but to be expected with the cheap price.
This place is surely not Halal friendly, but a good quick economic ramen break if you happen to be in the train station already.

There are about a dozen ramen places in Kyoto Ramen Koji which is up at the top of the Isetan Department Store. If the store is closed, you can reach it by taking the escalator in the KyotoStation up to the Cube restaurants. Ramen Koji is on the floor below the top floor. You can choose from about a dozen different restaurants from different regions. The noodles and and the broths vary. We liked Touyoko which featured rich pork bone marrow broth.
You can check the descriptions at each shop and there is a map of the locations with English. If you go at a popular time like Saturday night, you will see people sitting in a line of chairs by the restaurant's entrance. The seating does turn over quickly, partly because you select your choice while you are waiting. In some cases this is from a menu but can be from a vending macihne. You pick out the dish that you want and get a ticket which you present when you're seated. Oishi des!

I saw this Ramen theme park which reminds me of the one in Odaiba I went a few years back so decided to try out one of the ramen restaurant. I picked the one with the longest queue thinking it must be really good but I was wrong. The ramen is average and definitely not the best ramen I have eaten in Japan. The best ramen I have eaten is from one of the stalls in the ramen theme park in Odaiba, Tokyo a few years ago.
I will still recommend you this place if you are looking for a quick cheap meal.

If you want to eat fast (if there is no long waiting line), tasty and cheap, here you can find many ramen restaurants together. Order and pay at the machine at the entrance, ask/wait to be seated, give your tickets and your food is served fast.

We were on two weeks in Japan and during that time have a lots of ramen. But we all agreed that best ramen we ate was in Kyoto Ramen Koji located on 10th floor of kyoto station. There is 8 or more restourant inside that area and one we choose is named Kitakata Fukushima located at the end of the right side of Koji.

We are massive fans of ramen, so this place was just fantastic. We ended up coming here almost everyday during the time we were in Kyoto just to try a different ramen. The only minus point is the long queue during lunch time and the restaurants are all quite small.
