Overview

2-minute walk from JR Motomachi Station. It is a shopping street, formed in 1874, where you can feel Kobe the most. If you stand right in front of "La Luce," the beautiful stained glass arch that is a gate to Motomachi 1st street, you will be able to see Mount Rokko in the north and feel, from the south, the refreshing wind that Meriken Wharf brings. There are a lot of long-established stores that have been founded more than 50 years ago, such as kimono shops that sell kimono, yukata (informal cotton kimono), etc., bag shops, and coffee shops where you can relax comfortably.

This is a 1.2 km long covered shopping arcade. We walked the full length, and back, but did not find the shops interesting at all. Did not go in a single shop! As we reached the far end, it started to look a bit run-down....More

to walk this street is even at cold temperature a pleasure - nice atmosphere, not overcrowded and very selective shops, different products, not too much mainstream !

It's a nice shopping street but shops are opened quite late and some are closed quite early. If you want to see all the shops, the best time is to visit around noon.

I can 't really explain, but Motomachi has reminded me of my earliest childhood. It is the stuff of my dreams. Anyone else?...

Hee you have incredible amount of shops under a roof. Clothes, shoes, bags, food, paper... all kinds of things for sale. It is comfortable to walk there as the is a roof, no rain.

If you enjoy shopping, then you will enjoy this place. Plenty of shops to choose from but the crowd can be too much at certain times. Even the intersection crossing is manned by so many traffic police and maybe even busier than the Tokyo Ginza...More

Daimaru, Michael Kors, Uni -QLO and lots of speciality shops all within walking distance. Spent most time in B1 of Daimaru shopping centre as they have one of the best food hall I've ever seen

While guiding me elsewhere, Google Maps had me cross this shopping street. So I took a short detour. Though I am not a shopper, even I could see that this street is not upscale. Many stores, but the whole place reeks of a dowdy atmosphere....More

The shopping area was a bit old school. If you are interested by traditional Japanese items, you may find it exciting. I personally spent less than an hour here.

Motomachi Shopping Street is berserk with people. If you like noise and crowds or if you love shopping you will adore it. Otherwise after about five minutes you'll say "Get me out of here." More interesting (though equally crowded) is the nearby Chinatown.
