A quiet, peaceful setting tucked away near the center of the city. The monestary is, of course, not open to the public, but the beautiful church is. Rich, luminous frescoes throughout. I would recommend a stop at the gift shop (across from the church), which has many beautiful Christmas ornaments and a variety of others gifts. Highly recommended as a respite from more crowded sights in Yekaterinburg.

The monastery is a wonderful place to visit. The church is simply gorgeous and the atmosphere here is very special and kind. There is a nice cafe inside which sells pasties made at the monastery.

Founded at the end of the 18th century, the Novo-Tikhvinsky Convent was the largest monastery in Urals before the revolution. It had six churches and several workshops in operation: the monastery was like a town within a city. In the 1920s the convent was closed, and for several decades its walls hosted military and Soviet offices. Its revival began in 1994. Now the churches here are being restored, church arts are blossoming, and, monastic life filled with labor and prayer is being revived.

The Novo-Tikhvinsky Convent was conveniently located directly behind my hotel in Ekaterinburg. Each morning, I would attend morning prayers held in the magnificent St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. The beautifully landscaped grounds of the convent were surrounded by a high wall, the sweet smell of lilacs and the sound of birds singing offered me a peaceful sanctuary in which to reflect and write about my visit to the Ural city and the places associated with the final days of Russia’s last emperor and his family.

When in 1918, Tsar Nicholas II with all of his family were kept under arrest in the Ipatiev House, the nuns of the Novo-Tikhvinsky Convent prayed for them, asking God to relieve their sufferings, to strengthen them, and to give them the strength to bear everything with Christian humility.

The sisters' help came not only through prayer but also through deeds: disregarding their own safety, they supported the Tsar and his family by passing over various foods to them through the guards on a daily basis. On June 18th of 1918, a month before their murders, the Empress Alexandra Fedorvna made the following entry in her diary: "The kind nuns are now sending milk and eggs for Aleksey and for us, as well as cream."

On July 16th, 1918,while making their daily visit bearing food for the August family, the nuns were told not to come any more. That night, the Tsar and his entire family were brutally murdered at the hands of the Bolsheviks.

I highly recommend a visit to the convent. The interiors of the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral are among the most beautiful which I have ever seen in all my 30 years of travelling to Russia. As noted above, the grounds of the convent offer visitors a sanctuary of peace and beauty. The sound of the nuns singing during morning prayers is truly uplifting, a perfect start to a new day.
