The weir on the Iset river was the beginning of Yekaterinburg. It was built in 1723 by the orders of Vasily Tatishchev (see the nearby monument to him and his successor Georg de Gennin) to provide power to the iron works established here. Today the low dam, which separates the city pond from the historical square, is a favourite meeting place for locals, but also beloved by individuals, who just want some quiet, seated on one of the benches or steps here and meditating by looking over the water.

The weir here is called 'Plotinka' and the busy Lenin Avenue goes over it. At the park behind the dam can be visited the Water Tower, built in the 1880's for the railway factory that had replaced the iron works. Next to it is the Monument to the City's Founders, unveiled in 1998.

By the city pond are stalls selling ice cream or corn cobs, there are lone fishermen, flowerbeds, a cast iron rotunda and further back the richly decorated Sevastyanov's House.

It’s a nice place to wander. When I went there were people feeding the ducks. There are love locket bridges as well. A haven in the middle of the city.

Lots of activity taking place and this social gathering place. Many couples out for a romantic evening walk by the River Iset, street performers, teenagers hanging out, families on an outing, food and souvenir vendors, etc.

We wandered around this area and found plenty of interesting things to see. I suggest that you do a bit of research on this place to find out the history and importance of what you are seeing. It was also a great place to do a bit of "people watching" and observe a lot of people who were walking through the area. Certainly picturesque, especially during winter with all of the snow around. I really enjoyed this open and relaxed space in quite a busy city.

This is historical place. If you are visiting , must see.You can find here museums and restaurants, you can walk or run or you can just sit down and observe how live is going by. This is the place than everything started. This place can be warm, can be cold, can be attractive or harsh, just like Yekaterinburg itself.

There are great views of he river Iset from the pedestrian bridge. We stopped here to take photos of the area with the fountain, but unfortunately it was not turned on. It is interesting to view the relatively recent tradition of placing "love locks" on the metal railings. Maybe you can bring a lock and immortalise your visit to the city. We then took photos of the dam, which was calm. This is the area where the city started, so there are many historical sites in the vicinity. It is a good area to start the exploration of the city. There are many benches in the surrounding parks, where one can sit and relax.

This is just a short stop for photos while walking along Lenin Avenue. Attractions in the vicinity that may be explored, include the love stone and historical relief on the dam, which is reached through the pedestrian underpass, St Catherine's (Labour) square with the founders monument, water tank and chapel, and there are quite a few monuments on the north side of the walkway next to the river.
