A large stadium located on the outskirts of the city between two major highways - Moskovskoye Highway and Democratic Highway. The territory is simply huge, everything has been demolished around, new grass begins to grow. The stadium itself is very large, surrounded by a high fence with three passage gates. The gates are equipped with optical sensors for reading barcodes on tickets. There are many metal detectors out there. The line passes quickly. The stadium is multi-storey, four floors. Even the highest and cheapest places offer excellent views of the field. There are many toilets, as long as they are clean and tidy. Overall, the impression is extremely positive. You have to go far to the bus and tram stop.

Ever since 2018 football World Cup my son - a keen footballer and supporter - decided to visit as many World Cup sites and stadiums in Russia as possible. We visit our Russian family every summer and this year we've decided to add Samara to our traveling itinerary.

I enjoy visiting historic towns which Samara is. Built on a bank of Volga river it is famous for its extended riverbank walks and a historic centre In 2018 it also became one of host cities for the World Cup.

The sadium known as Samara Arena is an elegant structure in a middle of a green field. Its glowing dome looks very much like a spaceship visiting a historic city. We timed our trip so that we could see a local team Krylya Sovetov (who now got this wonderful stadiums as their base) playing one of the Russian Premier League matches. The stadium opens 2 hours before the kick-off and the club provides child-friendly entertainment and live music.

Tickets prices vary slightly depending on who is playis and so is attendance. The tickets are really cheap comparing to the UK prices. My son's ticket costed less than a penny! Imagine that!

The camera crew have fun picking up fans before the match and putting them on a big screen. Couples are encouraged to kiss while children are waving enthusiastically.

The attendance varies depending on the match but the stadium doesn't get filled like Arnfield or other English stadiums - football is still to make it big in Russia. The so called Active Support Group that is present at every game compensates for the empty seats. My son was really impressed by how coordinated and amusing their chanting and activities were! A show of its own right. Both teams played good football too. Even I got into the game and joined the shouting and the cheering.

Food outlets have a limited range but no one goes to football matches for sophisticated culinary experience. A cup of tea (for less than a pound) and a hotdog or Russian flavored crisps and chocolates - so you won't starve! Overall it is a jolly and family friendly place. Lots of children and only non-alchogolic beer. Easy transport links to the city which is worth visiting.

My boy was happy and so was I. Thank you, Samara.

The stadium is located far away from downtown, but for the couple of matches I needed to go to, the organization arranged trams and buses from different city stations to get there; I used the tram in both occasions, and they were nice trips. At the time of my visit, there were no buildings nor shops near the stadium, but the area was good. The flying saucer-like design of the stadium is great, and, as expected, the interior of the construction is good, too. I`ve got a place directly in front of one of the corners of the field, and the view from it was fine. Great atmosphere at all.

Why is it so far from the city? Why does the tram take so long to get there and then park about a mile away?

Apart from that the stadium is a perfectly designed modern arena. Lots of facilities and wide entry and exit points (unlike Kazan). The view is unimpeded and the acoustics are excellent.

But why such a drama to get there!?

This Stadium is away from the city but well connected to it by trams and buses. I attended one world cup match here and was really impressed by the Arena and its design. There are wide roads connecting it to the tram depot, parking lot and bus stand.
The stadium has a capacity around 50 k. The seats are very comfortable and allow movements nicely. Sufficient number of toilets and food outlets were there in each floor.

Because I had only attended World Cup games in Moscow, I was nervous that all the conveniences at the arenas there might not translate to arenas in other cities. However, I was happy to find that the arena in Samara, which was easy to reach by shuttle from the airport, was even better than I expected. It has a modern design, and the lines to store our "restricted items" were much shorter than the ones our friends faced in Moscow. We had third row seats, and although I thought we might be smushed in between some very excited fans, we actually had plenty of space to move around. The only issue was getting a taxi after the game. Samara isn't lucky enough to have public transportation that is quite as widespread as it is in Moscow.

This is a very nice stadium with perfect views from all places. At least during the World Cup there was sufficient number of toilets, buffets or souvenir shops available.
However, there was one problem observed: to reach stadium you need to walk >2 km. It was OK now - but it will not be easy during late autumn or in rainy / windy days.
