About
The Moscow state academic Chamber musical theatre of name of B.A. Pokrovskogo was founded in 1972 by Boris Pokrovsky. Pokrovsky was at that time Artistic Director of The Bolshoi, but his two spheres of work had nothing in common, his choise of repertoire for MCO being predominantly small-scale 18th-century pieces and modern Russian works. Pokrovsky was at the head of Moscow Chamber Opera until 2009. Gennady Rozhdestvensky was invited to joint as Musical Director in 2012. In the ensuing 41-years old, the Moscow Chamber Opera has given performances of more than 100 productions which range from Handel’s Imeneo, Mozart’s Basten und Bastienne and Der Schauspieldrektor and Salieri’s Prima la musica e poi le parole, to Shostakovich The Nose and Schnitke’s Life with an Idiot. From the first known operas like “L’Incoronazione di Poppea” by Claudio Monteverdi to the classics of the 20th century Sergey Prokofiev and Igor Stravinsky. From Musorgsky, Tchaikovsky and the author of Russian opera, the Metropolitan Dmitry Rostovsky, who created the first musical comedy about Christmas in the 17th century “Rostov Mysteries” to Britten and Schnitke.Today the theatre has a reperoire in Russian, Italian and German. The members of Moscow Chamber Opera are employed full-time by the company, the Moscow season lasting 11 months of the years, and some members have been witn the company since its formation. All the performers take equal status within the company and from one performance to the next may move from the chorus to a leading role. MCO’s home is in the historical cultural centre known as Slavyansky Bazaar on Nikolskaya Street just 3 minutes walk from Red Square and the Kremlin. Its stage is technically very well equipped so that it can be set up in any part of the auditotim.

Affordable Bolshoi Chamber Stage
Apr 2018 • Friends
Do you know that the Pokrovsky chamber opera has become a branch of the Bolshoi? I hope the singers are better paid now, but the tickets will remain affordable! Right now they are very, very cheap, especially in view of the remarkable quality of the performance. I’ve heard several productions here, among them Don Giovanni with an absolutely wonderful soprano trio and a very charismatic bass as Leporello. The authentic orchestra is a star in its own right, the musicians placed in the background of the stage. And they even have a mandolin! Rossini’s ‘Turk in Italy’ is one of the newer productions, very entertaining and elegant. Much as I hate those ‘modern trends’, moving classical titles into the 21st century surroundings, here I could not resist the good humour and the charm! You know what’s the clue to a good stage action? It’s when actors / singers / dancers enjoy what they are doing. Here they looked and sounded very much engaged. The stage director took 1950s-60s, the golden age of the cinema, as his theme. I particularly like the colours – white and a very lovely shade of red. The cast was wonderful, I hope I’ll find the theatre bill, don’t remember all the names off-hand. I was particularly impressed by Mr. Bobrov, the leading baritone, both for his voice and for his sense of humour. Note: As this building initially housed a fashionable 19th century restaurant, the Pokrovsky chamber opera when they laid their hands on this place a few decades ago had serious difficulties trying to turn it into a proper theatre. There are just about 200 seats, but finding the one from where you can not only hear but also see is really tricky. See my previous reports and the photos – I tried to point to the rows that are raised over the others.
