Jaro Metropolitan Cathedral (National Shrine of Our Lade of Candles) is a center of catholic faith in Western Visayas and sought by pilgrims. The church has the miraculous Candelaria image and possesses relics of St. Josemaría Escrivá. The church has a spacious parking which can accommodate numerous church goers and tourists.

The bell tower is across the street. One of the things that make this church unique.

The facade is also well maintained and it makes a good example of well preserved Spanish era church in the Philippines.

Aside from the Church itself, the Free-standing Belfry has its own charm. A must-see attraction while visiting Iloilo.

The Jaro Cathedral is a historic site that I love to visit so I can pray at the Adoration Chapel and light candles and have fervent prayer requests and wishes. This is such a memorable place for me.My friend and I visited this church and
prayed together on a Saturday anticipated mass.

This Cathedral looks older than its 1874 roots but was rebuilt in 1956 after an earthquake decimated it in 1948.

It is Baroque but the spires are Gothic. The Belfry is across the road and from my quick look seemed intact.

I arrived in dry weather at 0600 hours on a Sunday. It then teemed until 0720, but stopped before I caught a taxi back to Richmonde Hotel.

What I thought was the 0600 hours English Mass started at 0630. Both it and the previous Mass at 0500 were very well attended, with some standees down the back.

The altar flowers were beautful and the choir good, though they are probably better when in the local language as more parishioners would then sing the hymns. The Cathedral has a beautiful fresco.

It was P70 by taxi each way from or to Megaworld Boulevard.

Jaro Cathedral is a prominent symbol of Catholic faith of the Ilonggos. Here, you can find the famous Our Lady of Candles or the " Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria" which is enshrined on the second floor of the cathedral outside of the church. Her feast is celebrated every 2nd of February. It is the first Marian National Shrine and it is one of the most celebrated feasts by the Ilonggos where masses are held from 4:30 in the morning until 7:00 in the evening on an hourly basis.

History tells that the original church was destroyed by an earthquake Caycay in 1948 and was later repaired in 1956 by the first Archbishop of Jaro, the late Arch. Jose Maria Cuenco. Furthermore, it is also the first Marian image canonically crowned personally by the Pope and saint, Pope John Paul II.

Jaro cathedral is synonymous to devotees of the miraculous Nuestra Senora de la candelaria, the patroness of Western Visayas, the feast falls on February 2..but the parish is dedicated to St.Elizabeth of Hungary ..the century old belfry and the statue of hero Graciano Lopez Jaena as well as the marker for war veterans in Jaro plaza is a great reminder how rich is the history and religiosity of Ilonggos.

Beautiful inside and out:) Well worth the effort and the 54PHP taxi ride from SM Iloilo. Note that there's road construction from SM to here. Too hot to take the jeepney the day we visited. Warning: unscrupulous taxi drivers pickup unwary tourists here.

Lovely interior and exterior. The church has a staircase in the front that leads to the image of "Our Lady of Candles'.

The church also houses a quaint yet serene Adoration chapel, just next to the main church.

(If you want to make it here from the city by jeepney, look for the jeepneys with the sign 'CPU' (Central Philippine University).

Jaro Cathedral is one of the old cathedrals in Iloilo. It was constructed during the Spanish colonization. Nice church to visit.
