Every public utility jeepney passes near or on Colon Street, the oldest street in the country. Better avoid this area because there is no order here and traffic enforcers are not around when needed. Its a narrow road where the stores lining the street are old and selling cheap items. You can only use this as your landmark since it's in the center of the city. Old buildings are aplenty here. But there are affordable hotels and lodging houses within walking distance from Colon Street. Churches, like the Santo Rosario and the Metropolitan Cathedral are walking distrance from here. The Southern Integrated Overland Bus Terminal is also walking distance from Colon. I was on this street during the annual Sinulog festival where most inner city streets were closed for the religious procession and the street parade.

colon - a jargon for the human intestines. but in cebu, it is a long street abuzz with people from all walks of life. oh yes, some are even caught jaywalking to reach the other mall across from the one they came. you can see a university along this avenue, banks, markets, schools, hotels, restaurants, commercial outlets, alleys leading to residential houses - everything. must be the busiest street in the entire city.
there's even a little monument marking the end/start of the long road.

Colon is the oldest street in cebu. It is a very busy street where shoppers n people converge. Many public transport routes usually passes by this street. The street is filled with many malls, groceries, shops, restaurants, bakeries, drugstores, universities etc. It's a budget friendly place for shoppers to eat stroll n shop.

The oldest street in the Philippines they say.. some great deals if you know where to look, but, watch your self... go with a local..(dont stray alone). not a local that gets kickbacks from the shops.. maybe from the hotel, they probably have a city guide... fun, definitive Philippines shopping experience

Lots going on on this street; not for everyone. Even the hotel told me not to visit but of course since they said that I had to. Keep your backpack on your front. Lots of people, crowed, some sketchy folks but if you need anything, Colom street will have it. Would I go back? probably not.

I enjoyed Colon Street more at night, during the day not much to see or do, unless you are looking at shopping a local shopping malls.
Lots to see and do around the area with monument and YAPS house. The oldest street in Cebu City and location of night markets.

This place is very messy but good to visit for Philipino life. Not much street food but many local things here. Very hard to find taxi but you need to walk away from Colon street.

One of the Oldest Street in the Philippines. This is the Main access road from south to north. The only problem here if rush hour because it is traffic.

Landed in Cebu this morning and went for breakfast at Jolliebee at Colon street. Came across a group of small children near mango square with a lady. We knew they were up to something and crossed the road to avoid them. Thought it was safe when suddenly two girls came from behind and grabbed a phone from one of our friends. Luckily he realised and quickly snatched it from her.
After breakfast, we decided to get water from 7 eleven across the road. Noticed the gang, now with a few guys watching us from outside and on their motorcycle. When we left and tried to get a cab, one of them acted nice by opening our door and suddenly, he grabbed my friend's pouch as she was about to board the cab. She resisted and got dragged in the process. No one around saw/ helped. Luckily her bag was not taken away and he ran away.
Scary place for tourist. Please stay away! And be vigilant. Dont carry bags/ things that appear valuable.

OK: a shopping street isn't an attraction (though at night they sometimes have street markets!).
We visited Cebu (and therefore Cebu City) several times. Colon street is THE place to find a bargain. Prices at the Metro are LOWER than in the malls e.g. In the Colonade you find rum at prices below that of water ...
Yes, it's an old street, the sidewalks are uneven. So what - who complains of the steps in Rome or Paris?? Just to stay, some comments here are a bit too exigent.
Cebu City has a LOT of poor people. Some try to make an honest peso by vending lottery tickets, cell phones recharges, .. others turn to crime. We (family of 4) have never been robbed/pickpocketed and we do stand out in that crowd (really white, blond, ..). Why is that then? Well, like all SENSIBLE tourists, you don't take your finest jewelry along in the first place. Yes we have "brand" clothes, but not Ralph Lauren etc. To go in designer stuff there is like wearing a placque on your head "I CAN MISS A LOT OF MONEY - TAKE IT!". But hey - that's true everywhere (even Paris, Rome, ...). What you don't want to loose, you don't flaunt around, simple as that. SO the several warnings "be careful" - well, it's like that everywhere you (as enormously wealthy tourist compared to poor people) go.
The people who find Colon dirty, certainly haven't seen the rest of REAL Cebu City I fear.
Taxi's - who needs them (scared tourists?)? We take the jeepney's all the time. Safe, cheap and readily available. The drivers and co riders are very friendly, show you where to get off and one time (at 11.30 pm!!) the driver forgot us and when we mentioned, he first finished the tour and then brought us right to our hotel. A service we never expected so we gave him a nice tip (which he even refused at first!).
Go there, with your eyes open for the bargains yes and don't behave yourself like a scared fragile tourist. That's a globally sign for bad people to come by ....

We are staying at the Marco Polo Plaza for 2 nights in August what would be the recommended places to see?
Written April 22, 2017
I agree also with Ed regarding what your interest is but having traveled to Cebu many times while assigned to the US Embassy in Manila I have a couple of sites that I think are worth your time. Any taxi driver will be glad to take you to these but I would recommend using one of the hotel cars for the day. Sites to see:
1. Basilica del Santo Niño to view a 500 year old religious relic.
2. Cebu Taoist Temple which will give you a sense of some of the diversity of the Philippines.
3. Magellan's Cross which is supposed to be the cross, encased in metal, placed over the grave of Magellan.
4. Old Fort San Pedro a historic Spanish fort near the waterfront.
5. If you are daring then a visit to the Sky Experience Adventure.
6. If you really want some of the culture a visit to Carbon Market would provide this but be cautious at this location.
7. An interesting site on the island of Mactan is Lapu-Lapu Shrine, not a must but interesting.
8. If you are interested in nature I recommend a day trip to Mantayupan Falls located on the west side of Cebu in the town of Barili.
There are any number of interesting museums and houses to be seen but the items I have listed I have always found to be of interest and I have visited them many times over the 50 years I have visited and lived in the Philippines. Enjoy your trip and be sure and try the Philippine cuisine, especially the Adobo.

Written January 5, 2015
the best way is by cab. From robinson is straight down the road about 2 Km. colon road is quite long. many shops on both side of the road. Beware of pick pocketers. many shopping centres are found along the road.
