An extraordinary building, still getting use after many years . . . Very inexpensive. . . I enjoyed the bath in the spacious bath house with high ceilings. The towel with a bag to carry it Is a fun souvenir

The sand bath is worth a try at ¥1030; the regular hot bath is a bargain at ¥100. Be wary of the waiting times you are given for the sand bath - the "18 minutes" I was given turned into over an hour. The sand...More

Takegawara Onsen, which is about 15 minutes' walk from JR Beppu station, is probably the most traditional Japanese public bath. The entrance is photogenic. It is said that Hayao Miyazaki got the idea of "Sen and Chihiro" from this building. If you have time, I...More

I came here to try the sand bath. It was the only sand bath onsen I went to in Beppu, and it was quite relaxing (I fell asleep). I definitely would recommend coming here to try the sand bath. The shower and bath afterwards isn't...More

It was summer when I was there, so going to a onsen is absolutely a great idea to relax. I found this place since it's quite near the Beppu Guesthouse. The old Japanese lady who helped me with tickets did' speak English expect 2 words....More

We went to Takegawara Spa for a hot sand bath on a rainy day. There were a lot of people and we were told that the waiting time was likely to be 2 hours. After we paid the admission fee, we were told to stay...More

It is safe though I would not want to have my 8 year old having the weird experience of being buried alive . In addition the temperature maybe too hot for the child .
