Sumiyoshi shrine is a big Shinto shrine near Hakata station. I went there for new year’s Hatsumode. Unfortunately it was rainy on that day, but there were still many visitors. Although in the center of city, the premises are quiet. It is a nice place...More

Simple and rather small shrine compared to many others but have a heartwarming feel to it. Was abit troublesome when raining due to the puddles and almost got my shoes wet. But overall good experience with a lot of locals around (you can learn how...More

A peaceful park type shrine in the middle of the city. Well worth a quiet wander. Caught the tail end of a wedding and sumo wrestlers finishing up.

Have stayed at the hotel next door twice, but didn't realise this was here. I visited on a really rainy day, so there was nobody around. Enjoyed the peace, calm and watching the rain drop into the pond. It was lovely, despite the weather.

Well-maintained, and frequented by the faithful. I enjoyed the architecture and artwork. This was the first Shinto shrine I've seen visited by worshippers. Good to see the old traditions are alive and well.

This nice shrine doesn't look extraordinary, but it must be. We saw a Shinto infant 'baptism' (miyamairi) and a couple having wedding photos taken. On some days, there are sumo wrestling matches.
