30 minute train ride from Kyoto. 10 minute walk from station to beach. Nice and clean beach. Had a relaxing day in the shade. Japanese have barbecue here. Little Japanese snack restaurants around.

If you visit Kyoto during the hot summer months and enjoy swimming, Omi-Maiko Beach at Lake Biwa is a great place to go. Omi-Maiko Station is within easy reach from Kyoto with Japan's excellent train system (30-45 minutes each way), and the beach is a 500 m walk from the station.
We went there in mid-July, and there were quite a few people, but it was by no means overcrowded. It was a wonderful place to spend a hot summer day.
The beach was nice and clean (as most places seem to be in Japan), and the lake itself had clear water and a sandy bottom.
There are small shops along the beach and restrooms adjecent to the parking lot.

Caught the train from Kyoto - was nice to have a swim but it was a Japanese public holiday which we didn't know about. Really Really busy I could appreciate how nice it is to escape from the summer heat. Had lunch at one of the stalls was cheap and really good fried chicken and rice. Water clean and warm there were boats around = Noise.
