This ornate gate is one of the highlights of the Toshogu-shrine. Two golden lions are housed in the gate which adds to the dazzle. The carvings are mind boggling in their intricacies.

All of the temples in Nikko are stunning, and this gate is no different. When you first see it, it really does impress.

A remarkable and beautiful Gate. Such craftsmanship went into the carvings and the detail is amazing. The place is very crowded so be prepared. Shoes off to go inside. A must see.

This is a massive gate, very colorful with intricate details on both the front and the back. The gate appears to be newly restored as the paint looked fresh and still not faded.

Great starting pint for your visit to the mausoleum of Tokugawa Iemitsu. Visit early to beat the crowds otherwise you won't get a photograph without loads of people in it. Also the light early is incredible here.

The gate you will walk through when you visit the Toshogu shrine. Lucky me, the renovation is completed on the gate and I think it's the most beautiful shrine gates in Japan. Look closer and you can see the work is very detail.

If you don't like crowds, avoid May. There were so many students visiting from all over Japan for their senior ritual excursions. People congregate around the gate before they go up the stairs. There is a power spot but need to ask local store people...More
