On the drive over the top of the Shiretoko Highway Mt Rausu dominates the beautiful views up into the Shiretoko National Park. The best views, and the safest for the driver, are from the observatory area at the top of the pass. My understanding from asking in the local visitor information centres is that it can be accessed on foot but only with appropriate experience and equipment. This far north the weather can quickly turn dangerous at any time of year and of course it is an area where the largest predator is not man but the local brown bear population which can present great danger.

Many Japanese hike to the top of Rausudake but few tackle the 2-day loop through Io-Zan. It is described in the LP Hiking in Japan guidebook, but thr Shiretoko Nature Centre has a small map for free too.
The ridge is serious bear territory. I can guarantee you will meet some in this season, very close to the trail. I encountered 7 during this hike. The solitary male bears mind their own business (generally eating) even if you pass 20 meters away. But you must beware the female/cubs groups , a mother made a mock charge at me !
Fantastic views as well, including the island in Russia.
There are camping places with bear boxes.

Excellent trek and climb to the top of Rausudake to view the Shiretoko range, and enjoy great autumn colors!

While we get there, there are groups of photographers stand-by with some birding photos. We do not know what they after but the view of the ocean and the snow tips of the mountain open one heart.

The peak of Rausudake is one of the Top 100 peaks in Japan and well worth the 8 hours on the trail. The trailhead is a bit of a way out of Utoro and hard to get to without a car, as the buses don't head up until mid morning. Trail easy to find and no hassles even if you can't read Japanese.
