Fully natural hotspring tapped from original source

This is the go-to public onsen which we always visit when we go to Atami. Positives: the water is piped directly and continuously flowing from the hotspring source. The water is and never recycled and no chlorine is ever added. My husband and I have had great healing of skin issues, muscular tension and inflammation. Before immersing your body, do note: The water is extremely hot (because the source is more than 50 degrees Celsius or about 98 degrees Fahrenheit). May not be suitable for those with high blood pressure. Avoid 'shock' to the body by using the basins to scoop out the spring water to splash on yourself at least 10 to 20 times. Wash your body with the hot shower first. Before, in between and after soaking in the hotspring, take several sips of moderately warm water or water at room temperature which you can leave in the changing room. <You could make use of a water fountain in the waiting room on the way to the male/female segregated hotspring.> Start by first siting on the steps and just soaking your clean feet and then gradually immersing the rest of the body. My husband finds that keeping the water above chest level reduces the tendency for heart to pump harder than usual. Don't soak more than 3 minutes at a time. Get out, sip water and then rest for a while on the steps, splash perspiration away with the spring water then go back to soak (if you still want to). Cons: Closed on Tuesdays. Not suitable for those with high blood pressure as extremely hot water may aggravate the symptoms. Only one of the two gender segregated hotsprings has a big outer onsen (rotenburo) with a nice view and large rocks for relaxing. But then, the hotsprings are switched on a daily basis for males and females. So if you go two days in a row, on one of the sday you do get a chance to experience the outer onsen with a nicer view

A 10 minute walk from the train station, this historic onsen is located in an old wooden ryokan. The outdoor onsen is lovely and the temperature is just right. There’s a nice tatami “waiting room” to relax in after your soak. This onsen is not fancy, but it is very traditional and a good value.
