We went there as part of or tour and it was an enjoyable place to stop. The houses are very interesting to walk around. I enjoyed also buying bread to feed to the massive fish and walking around with the pretty umbrella. Nice doll displays too.

Exploring this place gave me a real sense of the Japanese Culture. The scenery is beautiful, it is worth taking time to stop and look around. Walk up the hill for a view of the area.

Went there both in summer and winter, and both times were absolutely perfect.
In summer you get to hear the famous cicadas sounds and see all the little paths that are covered in snow in winter.
I recommend staying at the very end of the day, when eveyone else is leaving, so you can have a final walk around the village and in the houses and experience the atmosphere of the empty houses and village. It gets a bit spooky and that's so good!
Oh and there's a few stamps to gather around the village, for stamp seekers like me.

I dropped in here briefly. It's easy to visit with the car park just down a short hill from the entrance. There weren't many people about and I just wandered around the lake to see the view. It was pretty but having just visited Shirakawago and Gokyama it was more of the same.

From the walking tour itself in Takayama, we decide to make a short trip to Hida Folk Village by bus. We get the package price of 1,000yen per person for the bus and admission ticket, it’s very convenient. The bus rides takes about 20 mins from the Takayama Nohi Bus station and there are several bus trips in a day. At the Hida Folk village, we can view the Hida mountain and walk around the area which tells us the history and looks at the types of houses that was built by different folks with grass straws, wood, stones, etc. There were some snows and during winter time, some walk path will be blocked because it’s slippery. To me, its quite like Shirakawago, looking at those houses with different design structures and I was told that it has beautiful view too at night with the lights on. A good place for photograph. We didn’t stay till evening and spent about 2 hours there, then took the bus back to station.

Absolutely love how the japanese people run museums. You can touch everything in the houses and explore like you are literally visiting real live houses unlike many where they shield and covers all items with covers. This makes the visit very intimate and authentic. Visited in winter and some houses are closed for visit but overall, it was a great place to learn more about takayama history and everything was very beautifully remodeled and laid out. Must go when u are in takayama.

It was a slushy snow day when we visited. We weren't sure if we should continue our plan to visit Hida Folk Village given the sleet. After waiting out at a cafe and checked Tripadvisor for user reviews to see if it was really worth the trip, I saw a user who mentioned the paths in the village are well paved even for rainy weather, we decided to go ahead with plan. And I'm so glad we did! It was peaceful with no crowd (since its rainy) and the slushy snow completed the dreamy winter landscape!
Tip: Complimentary umbrellas and even rubber boots are available for rent (found towards the left of the ticketing office after you ente). We missed that out as we started our walk towards the right. We would love to have changed into the waterproof rubber boots if we had realised earlier.

Hida folk village is a real village since the 50s, you can do great local experiences here, meet local people and get the opportunity to see real gassho zukury style houses. If you don't have time or money to go till the beautiful Shirakawa go, this is also a great compromise! You can go by walk 40 min, bycicle 20 min, bus 10 min, I reccomend the bus. You can match the bus ticket with the entrance for less than 10 dollars! It is a great place, I also reccomend to respect the environment, the people and to have a common sense while you are visiting.

Fascinating village in the country, away from cities , separated geographically by mountains. Felt a bit sorry for them as tourism seemed slightly invasive for this serene lifestyle, but it’s a living and an educational peak for a westerner into Japan’s rural past

Coming from Australia snow is a real treat. When we went to the Folk Village on New Years Day it was thick with powdery snow. We could still walk around as the sky was clear and blue. The water wheel was iced over and the thatched roofs had a foot of white powder. I was glad it was open however some of the areas such as the 500 year old hilltop castle were closed due to safety reasons.

At Takayama Bus Station, you can buy bus ticket including Hida No Sato entrance fee. Cheaper if you buy it together as 1 package (bus return ticket + entrance fee). Last bus 04.40 pm from Hida (if schedule not change) but the park closed at 5 pm. So make sure you aware of the bus schedule. if not bus, only taxi available and cost 1000 Yen back to terminal. In Hida, really dark at night. I don't eat Hida beef but you can find many restaurant in Takayama who sell Hida beef.

4 Adults will be visiting Takayama 18th - 20th March 2017, staying in Takayama and would like to visit your Village. Can we walk to the village or how do we get there? What is the cost to enter your village?

Hi,
Of course you can walk from Takayama to the village, it's about 40 minutes walk. You also can take the bus at the train station, and then it would be 10 minutes on the bus.
When you walk to Hida Takayama, you can first visit the teddy bear Eco Village (= it's a museum) entrance price is Y 600. Afterwards on the same side of the street you can walk to the hide folk village, the entrance price here is Y700.
The buildings (+30) were all moved from different parts of the Hida region. Artisans are working on traditional arts and crafts. And in March/April it's the Hina Dolls' Festival.
Hope this helps.
Best regards.

Dear everyone :),
My wife and myself are trvaeling to Japan this fall. We're visiting Shirakawa-go on our way from Takayama. The question is: should we visit Hida no Sato even if we wisit Shirakawago? (Some of you placed it instead of Shirakawago)
Thanks in advance,
Alexey B.

Hi Alexey,
Shirakawa-go is a huge destination (UNESCO World Heritage) with around 100 gassho-zukuri houses standing in an authentic village setting. On the other hand, Hida no Sato is a set-up, open air museum with around 30 gassho-zukuri houses relocated into the compound.
The level of authenticity is clearly very different for both, and hence the atmosphere and experience. However, Hida no Sato is just a 10-min bus ride from Takayama bus station, whereas Shirakawa-go requires a 50 to 60-min bus ride.
I guess you may give Hida no Sato a miss if time is not on your side, since you'll be seeing Shirakawa-go. Visit only if you have extra time and have covered other sights in Takayama.
More detailed step-by-step info and photos on both attractions and transportation in my humble blog. Hope it'd help. Have a great holiday! :)

Hi there,
I would like to ask how long do we need to visit Hida Minzoka Mura Folk Village and the Craft Center?
Cheers,
Ivan.

I didn't visit the craft centre when i went to Hida no sato. I went to the folk village, took a few pictures, enter the Teddy bear museum and teddy bear cafe. All together took me about 2.5 hours.

If you visit the Hida Folk Village houses is there anything different to see in Shirakawa-go? We have 2 days and nights in Takayama.

I think one day is enough walk around the village.
In winter time, this area is called deep show in this village.
So I recommend to prepare warm closes
