Shortly before the last, frighteningly steep, descent to the open air museum, there is a sign indicating a rather nice though plain church: the Aynalı church. . Apart from the church there are several other rooms that one can reach climbing through the rocks. It is named Symmetrical Church on some sites, ayna meaning mirror as in my dictionary it is translated as "paneled", and the front has noticeable panels (though they are not unique to this church).…

Fantastic ancient monastery with small tunnels and wonderful paintings. We were one of the few people there. Guard gave us a flash light and we had so much fun crawling in dirt and climbing carved rock staircases. We felt like Indiana Jones not knowing what was at the end of the tunnel. …

The church itself isn’t much different than others in Göreme - what makes this one special is it’s multiple chambers and narrow tunnels you can access. The entrance is 10TKL per person and you’ll be provided with a lamp. To avoid if you are claustrophobic.

Wandered in here after visiting the open air museum, keep going up the hill and along the road 600m or so and it is sign posted on your right. It cost 5tl entry, nothing special in the art, but it is fun to explore the tunnels. This must have been a bit of a strong hold with several round stone doors at different points to keep maurauders out. Probably not worth visiting if you have mobility problems.…
