This is a very local place where you get to witness auctions for fishes in a wet and smelly market. It is part of the Sri Lankans lives and if you want to be part of the local lives, this is definitely one of the...More

The fish market is an eye opener, all the nights catch are processed that day, and yes there is a smell but it cleans out your sinuses. There are snake charmers there with a cobra 500R per picture. Fish are gutted and laid out to...More

The fish market and the beach around it are well worth a short morning visit. The market itself is interesting just to see the variety of fish caught - be prepared for the smell though ! Around it you have the fishing boats, people sorting...More

Great introduction to Sri Lanka. A real buzz. Noisy, smelly...everything you'd expect. Go to the beach to see all the fish drying and the fisherman and boats. A real experience of every day life.

Be patient and watch what locals pay and be prepared to bargain. I did not actually buy any prawns so not sure of a relevant value. It is still cheap.

I went to this market just after 11am and it was bustling with energy, both around the stalls and on the beach. But it was very hot so early mornings are better for that reason too. Enjoy!
