About
In 1968, Director Sung set on his project to turn a piece of deserted 'wasteland' at Jeoji-ri, Hanyoung-myon into something else. Thanks to his strenuous efforts and strong will, we now have the beautiful garden that represents the quintessence of Jeju. Consisting of 7 small gardens and auxiliary facilities, this Spirited Garden provides spaces where you can find peace of mind surrounded by waterfall, ponds, stone bridges as well as trees. All the garden trees, bunjaes, and stones allows you to relieve yourself from any everyday life burden and to take a respite to enjoy the beauty of the nature. High walls built in order to protect trees from strong winds became castles and the architectures built to house exhibitions and to serve convenience purposes now represent the beauty of the nature in Jeju. They are sure to provide people from around the world with chances to think of a new paradigm of life

It was winter in South Korea and we were fortunate to arrive in Jeju the day after a heavy snowfall (which caused the airports to close). One of our planned stops was Spirited Garden. While it was wintery and perhaps not the most ideal time to visit it was nonetheless such a peaceful and serene experience. We were the only ones there at that time and had the luxury of roaming freely an taking in the sights and snapping pics of the beautifully cultivated and trimmed gardens while reading about the history. As we were approaching the end of our visit we were met by a kindly looking gentleman who offered to take a group pic for us. We assumed he was a casual worker but later realised that he was Director Seong himself!! He was humble and unassuming and took us into the cafeteria (which was actually closed) and shared with us a bit more about his personal love and dedication to Spirited Garden. We were so fortunate indeed to have his extra insights.

Recently, because I had a headache. So I went to the Spirited Garden.(It's my routine.) I visited the garden many time, so I thought there would be no new feeling. However, when I climbed the bench on the hill and looked at the garden, I felt a very new feeling. Looking at the garden from the bottom of the hill, the view from the top is completely different. I think my problem has been solved, too. As expected, the Spirited Garden is always inspiring me. We know that the garden in winter is nothing to see. However, the garden has come to know again that it is different from our fixed ideas. Merry Christmas, everyone.

it is one of the best gardens that I have visited. very zen, very philosophical, and do pay attention to all the subtle messages in each description of the Bonzai pots or any other plants. It all about world peace...... Very inspirational.

Spirited Garden is one of my favorite places in Jeju. I visit the garden when I have a headache or when I'm depressed. When I look at the trees in the garden, I feel calm and organized. There is something stand out during this visit. “Elm trees attached to stones” Wow, how can a stone and a tree live together? Even if rocks and trees can live together, I’m sure I can get along better with people. It was a day where I felt a lot in Spirited Garden

There must have been a time when the garden was able to earn the praises of visitors, including some world leaders. But perhaps it, too, fell victim to the Covid pandemic. It was in a sorry state. The plants were unkempt -- some even dying -- and the grounds poorly maintained. Considering the place is not big, it's really down to neglect. We did not even bother to take any photos.

This is my fifth time to the Spirited Garden.garden. I realy love this garden. So, I hope that a lot of foreign visitors visit the garden and will share my experience of this garden. If you want to visit the most traditional Korean garden. The Spirited Garden is the right one. Korean garden is much different from China and Japan garden. Spirited Garden shows different face every four season. If you have the plan to Korea(Jeju)and visit the garden, I'd like to give you some advice.
I recommend that you read the information provided by Spirited Garden. It will be a good opportunity to know the history of the garden and the meaning of bonsai. You will find that bonsai explains the relationship between trees and people.
I hope you will experience a unique garden of Korea in Jeju.

The gardens are peaceful and pleasant to stroll around. There is a lot of emphasis on Confucian lore, which is a tad overplayed. Also overplayed is the constant homage to whatever Chinese Premier visited to dig a hole and plant a bonsai. The shop and restaurants are in beautiful buildings and of high quality. The use of local lava rock to surround the gardens makes for a sombre effect, but I guess that is the intent. This is not the sort of place the teens are going to rave about, but older folk and gardeners will very much enjoy

In a hurry up and go culture, it was nice to slow down and wind down walking through the gardens. Relax at the cafe and try the food.

A must stop during our busy vacation here in Jeju! They have free parasols that we used during the sunny day and it made the garden a lot nicer to enjoy. We bumped into the Director that created the garden and he was very kind. I highly recommend buying his book from the store and he even gave us an autographed copy:)) You can tell that each bonsai tree in the garden has a lot of love invested. There are koi fish in the water flowing through the garden and they are well fed and taken care of. There is also a cafe in the garden that has fancy drip coffee. We went in early October and the weather was perfect.

When we entered the garden, the ticketing lady was extremely kind to us and offered us parasols to use during our stay there. It was a beautiful, well-kept place with extremely picturesque and serene areas. We met Mr. Sung, the man who created the garden, and he told us about some of the history of the garden. He even gave us a free book to read. 10/10 experience and I will be coming again!
