A visit to this museum will give you an appreciation and understanding of the people groups and their culture of the province of North Sumatra, Medan being the principal city. Allocate 2 hours, and try to go as soon as the museum opens since some rooms are not air conditioned. Two school groups were there at the same time which made the visit a little unpleasant as some were unruly, but it was nice to connect with some younger, friendly Indonesians. Worth the visit. The entrance fee is insanely cheap and you pay for it at the kiosk at the entrance to the property, not in the building.

A rambling building created in a traditional style, filled with thousand of culturally and historically significant items. Carvings, masks, period costumes to name a few. The displays are old and dusty and are in need of a big investment. Entry is inexpensive and the staff are very enthusiastic.

On a main road a few km south of the centre, first impressions of this place are promising. The traditional steep roofed Sumatran style building has been carefully designed to reflect local history and culture, but the interior is a let-down. There are some good exhibits reflecting prehistory, ancient and recent history of the area, but the lighting is gloomy and the presentations unimaginative. There’s not enough text - even when you can read Bahasa - and you’re left guessing as to why these items are important. A whole room downstairs is devoted (quite unnecessarily) to portraits of provincial governors, whilst half the upstairs was closed (without explanation)when we were there. There’s supposedly a souvenir shop, but nobody could be bothered to open it.
Not surprisingly the only other people there at the time of our visit were schoolchildren, who presumably didn’t have a choice.
What a missed opportunity. With the benefit of a building like this one, North Sumatra could have a much more interesting story to tell.

This museum has a few marvellous exhibits, explaining in simple language the complex history of the region. It is a pitty that some of the exhibits are severly underlit, letting us distinguish rather than discover some of the beautiful artefacts.

Badly lit, noisy school kids unsupervised, this was an unusually bad museum visit. Unless you are culturally inclined, you can do better elsewhere.

We wandered thru here this week, The museum has a lot of interesting items, from prehistoric to modern times. I thought some of the wooden caskets and carvings were especially well done. Well worth the time and money (it is dirt cheap to enter).

Museum Gedung Arca - good museum which looks at historical developments from pre historic times to present. Allowed a couple of hours but cut my visit short on account of a grossly uncomfortable experience of all air conditioning units switch off. The museum was like a sauna and the experience miserable despite having many interesting artefacts.

Represented are wood carving and there utility application through history. Trade and ceramics. Textiles and manufacturing. The sea and it’s importance. From coffins to regional traditional dress, this was fascinating. Early ceramics from China were impressive. Maybe if you want to visit, take a fan with you and some water to drink. No photography restrictions other than no flash. Nice museum, but off putting to have air conditioning in every gallery, but for all to be switched off.

Poorly produced but highly relevant booklets on aspects of culture available at the ticket check. Museum shop had little of interest. Note you need to busy your tickets outside the museum in the kiosk adjacent to where you entered the museum grounds from the roadside.

Positive: National museum with excellent displays of local/traditional life and costumes. There is also a significant and clear section on Indonesian independence on the main level.
Negative: No A/C so by the time you get to the top floor it's overwhelmingly hot and humid.

Also known as the North Sumatra Museum, this is a very nice bunch of exhibits beginning with the actual origins of mankind in Sumatra. Beside the description of the various peoples that exist in the island (with examples of their differing faiths, housing, clothing types, and cultural differences), which I found most fascinating - the museum also provides an excellent narrative about the trading turned occupying forces from without. Dutch and Japanese most prevalently. There are sets showing the work types and methods. The numerous wars are also covered. The animal section is pretty aged.
